We are just about a month away from Portland Retro Gaming Expo 2026!

The awesome folks that have put together this year’s Portland Retro Game Expo have released the following announcement for the upcoming event:

 

First: we have an exciting cast of four voice actors who will celebrate the 35th anniversary of Sonic the Hedgehog with us! Sonic’s #1 fan G To The Next Level will also join the party and will cover all things hedgehog!

Second: Gail Tilden of Nintendo (who was the marketing manager for the US Pokémon launch) will join our Pokémon party, together with Frank Cifaldi and Pokémon content creator Tama Hero.

And we also have a world premiere! Tom duBois – the man that defined the visual identity of Konami will make his debut at this year’s Portland Retro Gaming Expo! Despite his celebrated status, Tom has never before appeared at a convention until now!

Ryan Drummond is an actor, performer, singer, clown and is best known for his role as the original voice of SONIC THE HEDGEHOGin the Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise from 1998 to 2004.

Ryan also has many on-screen credits including BAYWATCH, POINT PLEASANT, TWO GUYS A GIRL AND A PIZZA PLACE and your favorite Cheerleading movie, BRING IT ON.

Ryan has also voiced countless characters in over 75 video games unrelated to SONIC. For example, Eliot Ballade in Blue Stinger, Kevin Kertsman in Illbleed, Rick Arlen in Nancy Drew: Stay Tuned For Danger, Pizza Boy in Twisted Metal 4, Jonathan Carnahan in The Mummy, Multiple Characters in Backyard Baseball, Football, and Soccer, and he has recently voiced the Doctor in Mafia: Definitive Edition.

Drummond has also voiced many of your favorite Halloween animatronics and decorations… scary!!

What would Sonic be without the main antagonist Doctor Ivo Robotnik aka Doctor Eggman?

Mike Pollock has been the voice of Dr. Eggman in the Sonic the Hedgehog video games since 2003. He’s also been heard in Ultimate Muscle:The Kinnikuman Legacy, Kirby: Right Back At Ya!, Pokémon, and Berserk, as Sir Hardin Thicke on Howard Stern’s Master Tape Theater, and in commercials for IHOP, Hooters and Pepsi.

Scott Dreier is an American actor and singer. He is the voice of Knuckles the Echidna in the Sonic the Hedgehog Sega video game series in such iconic games as Sonic Adventure 2, Sonic Battle, Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic Heroes. Scott is also known for his television work including Harold the Herald on Disney’s The Suite Life on Deck as well as his work on shows ICarly, The First Family, Malcolm in the Middle, Coop and Cami Ask the World, and ABC’s The Rookie. Scott is also a singer and recording artist.

His first self-titled album features a duet with TV’s Katey Sagal (Futurama, Married with Children). Scott just released his 3rd album of holiday jazz standards simply named “Christmas”, Scott Dreier with Andy Langham.

Gail Tilden was the Vice President of Brand Management at Nintendo North America, responsible for the Pokémon launch and many other Nintendo properties.

Pokémon was released 30 years ago and has become one of the most popular and enduring media franchises in the world! Meet Gail and hear the incredible story of how it all started!

Gail was also part of the team that brought the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) to the US.

Tom duBois is a celebrated American illustrator whose iconic cover art helped define the visual identity of Konami’s classic video games during the late 1980s and early 1990s. His dynamic, action-packed illustrations brought titles like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV: Turtles in Time, Contra III: The Alien Wars, and Super Castlevania IV to life.

Working often as an uncredited freelancer, duBois created some of the most memorable and culturally impactful artwork in video game history. His signature style blends bold color palettes, dramatic lighting, and exaggerated perspective, capturing the energy, narrative, and intensity of each game. His cover art played a defining role in the Western branding of Konami, influencing the first impressions of countless players and contributing to the lasting success of these franchises.

Today, duBois’s originals are prized by collectors, and his legacy is honored in retrospectives, exhibitions, and publications focused on retro gaming and game art history.

This is Tom’s first convention appearance ever!

Before legendary Michael Cranford created the popular “The Bard’s Tale” on the Apple II and the follow-up “The Bard’s Tale II – The Destiny Knight” – he was envisioning a game called Shadow Snare.

Jim Vessella is a Producer and “Digital Archeologist” at Electronic Arts, tasked with researching, recovering and restoring old bits and bytes (among many other things), a videogame-asset focused Indiana Jones if you will.

Hear Jim tell the incredible story of unearthing a massive treasure trove of ancient physical media and see real footage of the recovered artefacts.

This is a must-attend for anybody interested in recovery and preservation of physical media containing analog and digital data!

Author Jeremy Parish is back at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo and talks about bad and really bad NES games. No one sets out to make a bad video game! But the small budgets and quick production schedules of the NES era led to lots of games that clearly didn’t come together as intended.

Look closer, though, and you might see hints of excellence beneath the mess. Dive into some of the NES’s most infamous misses as Jeremy Parish “JAWS” about the potential greatness they hide.

Steve Wiebe, the ‘King of Kong’ and two-time world champion in Donkey Kong, joins the Portland Retro Gaming Expo on Saturday morning to debut and talk about his autobiography and his amazing journey in the world of competitive gaming, music creation and composition, and teaching.

 

Game designer, screenwriter, and novelist Flint Dille is joining the Portland Retro Gaming Expo for the first time! Flint has done a plethora of amazing things: from writing for animated TV shows and movies like Mr. T, Transformers, G.I. Joe, An American Tail: Fievel Goes West, or his game-writing of The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and Dead to Rights, as well as co-authoring a script with Gary Gygax for an unmade Dungeons & Dragons film, writing four Sagard the Barbarian game books (also with Gygax) or writing ‘The Ultimate Guide to Video Game Writing and Design’ with John Zuur Platten. Wow!

Our giant six-foot Clippy will be back at PRGE and this time we’ll have a raffle: At this year’s show take a selfie with your favorite obnoxious paperclip, post it on social media, tag it with #clippyPRGE and after a few days, we’ll pick a random winner for a fabulous Clippy float!
