Unity could soon become the latest major gaming industry company to change hands, with private equity firm Silver Lake Partners and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) reportedly holding discussions about acquiring the game development software provider.
According to a report from Reuters, the two investors approached Unity in recent weeks about a potential acquisition. Silver Lake already owns approximately 8% of the company and has an existing representative on its board, making the latest discussions particularly noteworthy. The proposed investor group has reportedly considered a valuation of approximately $25 billion, although Unity’s recent financial results have since increased its market capitalization to around $21.5 billion.
While no agreement has been reached, Unity is reportedly working with an investment bank to evaluate its options following the approach. The discussions remain confidential, and there is no guarantee that a transaction will materialize or that the potential terms will remain unchanged. Unity declined to comment on the report, while Silver Lake and PIF did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The potential acquisition would represent another significant investment in the gaming industry for Silver Lake and PIF, which recently joined forces with Affinity Partners to take Electronic Arts private in a deal valued at approximately $55 billion. That transaction, which closed in August, was one of the largest leveraged buyouts in the history of the industry.
Unity would represent a different kind of investment, however. Rather than acquiring a major publisher with an established portfolio of recognizable franchises, the consortium would be looking at one of the most widely used technology providers in game development. Unity’s engine and development tools power thousands of games across PC, consoles, and mobile devices, while its real-time 3D technology is also used in industries outside gaming, including automotive design and filmmaking.
The company has also been working to strengthen its financial position, recently reporting its first quarterly GAAP profit since going public in 2020. Its third-quarter revenue reached $622 million, representing a 32% increase year over year.
For now, Unity’s future ownership remains uncertain, but the possibility of another major acquisition involving Silver Lake and PIF raises further questions about the growing influence of major investment groups in the gaming industry. Following their recent acquisition of Electronic Arts, Unity could become another significant piece of the gaming business to fall under their collective ownership.
