Krufs Productions has announced that its retro-inspired survival horror game Heavy Metal Death Can will launch for PlayStation 5 this fall.

Heavy Metal Death Can originally launched for PC via Steam on May 28, giving players a chance to experience its claustrophobic take on classic survival horror. The upcoming PS5 release will bring the game to consoles for the first time.

A Survival Horror Game Beneath the Ocean

Heavy Metal Death Can is set aboard the HMS Domherren, a Swedish Cold War-era submarine trapped beneath the Norwegian Sea. Players take on the role of a survivor attempting to navigate the vessel after a mysterious substance known as the Sludge turns members of the crew into horrific zombies.

The game takes place in an alternate-history version of late 1970s Sweden, combining Nordic influences with the unsettling atmosphere of deep-sea horror. As players explore the damaged submarine, they will encounter other survivors while attempting to uncover the truth behind the disaster.

The story also introduces characters such as the enigmatic Milton and the nihilistic Captain Olof, with players forced to determine who they can trust as they search for a way back home.

A Throwback to Classic Survival Horror

Krufs Productions has designed Heavy Metal Death Can as a tribute to the survival horror games of the 1990s.

The game uses fixed camera angles and tank controls to create a deliberately old-school experience, while modern control options are also available. Limited ammunition and resources mean players will need to carefully consider how they approach the dangers lurking throughout the submarine.

The visual style similarly draws from late-’90s horror and adventure games, combining retro-inspired environments with modern rendering technology. The result is a world that feels familiar to fans of classic console horror while still presenting its own distinct setting.

Inventory management also plays an important role. Players will need to keep track of ammunition, keys, supplies, and mysterious objects discovered throughout the submarine, with resources often in short supply.

Swedish Horror Meets Deep-Sea Terror

One of the game’s more distinctive elements is its unusual setting.

Rather than placing players in a haunted mansion, abandoned laboratory, or isolated town, Heavy Metal Death Can confines its horror to the cramped corridors of a Cold War submarine. The industrial surroundings are contrasted with elements of Swedish culture and a soundtrack built around distorted guitar, analog synths, and unsettling stretches of silence.

The combination creates a strange mixture of Nordic noir, science-fiction horror, and classic survival horror.

The Sludge is at the center of the game’s mystery, possessing members of the crew and transforming them into violent creatures. As players move deeper into the submarine, they will uncover clues about what happened aboard the vessel and the conspiracy surrounding the incident.

Heavy Metal Death Can Comes to PS5

Heavy Metal Death Can is currently available on PC through Steam, where it launched on May 28, 2026. The PlayStation 5 version is scheduled to launch in fall 2026.

Krufs Productions has not yet announced a specific release date for the PS5 version.

With its fixed camera angles, limited resources, retro-inspired presentation, and claustrophobic submarine setting, Heavy Metal Death Can offers a distinctly old-school approach to survival horror while putting its own Swedish spin on the formula.

The PS5 release will give console players the opportunity to descend into the depths of the HMS Domherren and uncover the mystery surrounding the Sludge later this year.
