Atari has announced that Carrier Command 2 will launch for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch. The upcoming console versions are being developed in cooperation with original publisher MicroProse and developer Geometa, but a release date for the console versions has not yet been announced.

Originally released for PC via Steam on August 10, 2021, Carrier Command 2 is a real-time strategy and military simulation game that combines large-scale tactical planning with first-person vehicle control. The game serves as a modern follow-up to the cult classic Carrier Command, which originally launched in 1988.

At the center of the experience is a futuristic aircraft carrier operating in an archipelago filled with contested islands. Players take command of the carrier and must gather intelligence, plan attacks, deploy military units, and capture territory while attempting to keep their own floating command center operational.

Rather than limiting players to an overhead strategy view, Carrier Command 2 allows them to take direct control of the military vehicles deployed during their operations. Aircraft, drones, amphibious vehicles, and other units can be piloted firsthand, creating a combination of real-time strategy and first-person simulation.

Players will need to use information gathered from their vehicles and radar systems to determine where and when to strike. Each island presents different defensive positions, resources, and strategic considerations, meaning that simply capturing territory is only part of the challenge.

Controlling islands also plays an important role in the game’s progression. Captured territory provides resources that can expand the player’s logistical network and unlock additional production capabilities. Maintaining those supply lines and defending captured locations becomes just as important as continuing the offensive.

The game allows players to seamlessly switch between commanding their forces from the carrier’s bridge and personally piloting vehicles in the field. This command-to-cockpit approach means players can formulate a broader strategy before jumping directly into the action to execute their plans.

Combined-arms tactics are also a major part of the experience, with players able to coordinate different types of military units during assaults. The carrier itself remains vulnerable throughout the campaign, so offensive operations must be balanced against the need to protect the player’s own forces and maintain access to vital resources.

Carrier Command 2 also supports multiplayer, including a cooperative setup where another player can serve as a second-in-command and help manage the carrier’s various responsibilities.

The console release will give a new audience the opportunity to experience Geometa’s modern take on the Carrier Command formula. The original game became known for combining military strategy with vehicle simulation, and Carrier Command 2 expands that concept with larger-scale tactical operations, direct vehicle control, resource management, and multiplayer cooperation.
