Deep Silver and KING Art Games have unveiled an extensive new look at The Last Stand, the returning horde survival mode coming to Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV. Showcased in a new 30-minute Battlefield Report, the mode brings back its familiar cooperative survival gameplay while introducing additional strategic options that should give players more ways to approach each increasingly difficult encounter.

Returning to its roots, The Last Stand allows up to three players to team up as powerful Commanders and face 20 escalating waves of enemies. Each Commander can reach up to 30 levels during a playthrough, unlocking an assortment of skills and equipment to improve their combat capabilities as the battlefield becomes increasingly dangerous. The familiar survive, upgrade, and repeat formula remains intact, but Dawn of War IV is introducing a significant new layer to the experience.

Each Commander will now lead a Strikeforce consisting of up to four Companion units, each with their own specializations to unlock. This addition introduces more opportunities for tactical experimentation, allowing players to combine different units and abilities while adapting to the challenges of each wave. Managing battlefield positions, maintaining survivability, and collecting valuable health supplies between encounters will also be important to making it through the full gauntlet.

The Last Stand will feature five playable Commanders at launch, representing all four factions in Dawn of War IV. This includes two different Space Marine Chapters, the Blood Ravens and Dark Angels, with additional Commanders planned as free post-launch DLC. Between the expanded unit options and additional progression systems, the returning mode looks to offer considerably more flexibility than its previous incarnations.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War IV launches on December 3, 2026, for players purchasing the standard edition, while Commander Edition owners can begin playing three days earlier on November 30. Both editions are currently available for pre-order with a 10% discount.

The Last Stand is also only part of the game’s planned post-launch support. KING Art Games and Deep Silver have outlined a Year One roadmap featuring free updates that will introduce the return of Crusade Mode, additional maps, new modes, more Commanders, and a Mission Editor. Two major story expansions are also planned, promising to further develop the conflict on Kronus while introducing another playable faction.
