SEGA and RGG Studio have pulled back the curtain on the characters at the heart of STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, revealing a sprawling cast that will accompany protagonist Makoto Daito throughout his decades-spanning journey.
Launching January 15, 2027, STRANGER THAN HEAVEN follows Daito from 1915 to 1965 as he attempts to find somewhere he can truly call home. Born to an American father and Japanese mother, Daito finds himself caught between two worlds, eventually setting out for Japan after facing persecution in America. His journey begins aboard a ship bound for Japan, where he encounters fellow traveler Yu Shinjo, a half-Japanese, half-British man facing circumstances of his own.
The two form a lifelong friendship as they attempt to build new lives, but their journey soon brings them into contact with a much larger cast of characters, each with their own ambitions and histories. Among them is Orpheus, a globe-trotting merchant portrayed by Snoop Dogg, who discovers Daito hiding aboard his ship and becomes an important figure in his early life in Japan. Daito will also cross paths with Heigo Yashima, a successful merchant in Kokura who helps him navigate his new surroundings.
Music and show business will play a major role in Daito’s story. Takashi, portrayed by Satoshi Fujihara of OFFICIAL HIGE DANDISM, becomes Daito’s sworn brother and a gifted pianist whose talent helps rekindle Daito’s own passion for music. Suzy Day, portrayed by Tori Kelly, is a talented singer hoping to make her mark in show business, while Keiko Shirai, portrayed by Ado, is described as the diva of wartime Osaka.
The cast also includes Tae Matsumoto, a café waitress and yakuza member’s mistress; Kiyoshi Otsuru, a stylish older man with an unmistakable presence; Takeo Godai, a quiet but skilled craftsman portrayed by Takaya Kuroda; and Suekichi, another of Daito’s sworn brothers.
The criminal underworld will also factor into Daito’s story, with characters including Genzo Iwaki, the powerful boss of Kure, and Tadashi Hataoka, a violent yakuza from Kokura. Iwaki is portrayed by the late legendary actor Bunta Sugawara, with SEGA receiving permission from his family to recreate his likeness using archival footage and photographs provided by Toei Company. His voice is performed by Takashi Ukaji, who had a close connection with Sugawara.
Elsewhere, Yasukaze Motomiya portrays young Kure yakuza Tetsuya Hama, while Daisuke Shiba of Mogurider portrays Kimura, an easygoing nightclub worker in Kamurocho. The cast also includes The Veiled Stranger, portrayed by Cordell Broadus, who is stationed in postwar Japan.
One of the more unexpected additions is Amaru, a man hiding in Japan who is portrayed by Tupac. According to SEGA, his appearance was created with permission and ongoing supervision from Amaru Entertainment, with RGG Studio working closely with the estate and using archival footage and photographs without AI in the creation of his character design. Further details about Amaru’s role are being kept under wraps for now.
With a story spanning five decades and multiple cities, STRANGER THAN HEAVEN appears to be building its world around a particularly large ensemble, with Daito’s relationships, music career and encounters with the criminal underworld all playing into his journey.
RGG Studio has also offered a closer look at the game’s show business elements, including how Daito finds musical inspiration, creates songs and promotes performances. Players can expect these mechanics to be an important part of his life as the story progresses.
STRANGER THAN HEAVEN is scheduled to launch on January 15, 2027, for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, Steam and PlayStation 5. The game will also be available through Xbox Game Pass. Pre-orders are now open, with physical and digital pre-orders including the Dosu: Kagekiri DLC weapon.
