Wizards of the Coast has unveiled the first gameplay for Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons, an upcoming third-person single-player action-adventure game set within a dark fantasy world inspired by Dungeons & Dragons.

Developed by Invoke Studios, Warlock puts players in the role of Kaatri, a veteran weapons master who enters into a pact that allows her to wield otherworldly magic against the dark forces threatening the world. Kaatri is voiced and performed by Tricia Helfer, known for her roles in Battlestar Galactica and Lucifer.

Magic is at the centre of both exploration and combat in Warlock, with players encouraged to experiment with their abilities and use the surrounding world to their advantage. Spells can be used to unlock new paths, interact with the environment and overcome obstacles, while combat combines magical abilities with Kaatri’s skills as a seasoned weapons master.

The newly revealed gameplay also introduces Tasha, a brand-new character played by Maggie Robertson. Tasha serves as Kaatri’s patron and source of power, teaching her how to sense Raw Magic, a mysterious power hidden throughout Darkon that allows Kaatri to expand and transform her magical abilities.

The gameplay footage provides an extended look at how Warlock‘s systems come together. Kaatri can manipulate her surroundings, take advantage of enemy positioning and even use weather conditions to create tactical opportunities. Players can chain different spells together before switching to melee combat, creating a combat system that rewards experimentation and observation.

Outside of combat, magic will also play an important role in exploration. Rather than simply serving as another way to defeat enemies, spells can be used to reshape the environment and reveal new possibilities throughout the world. Experimenting with different abilities could uncover alternative paths, unexpected solutions and new ways of interacting with the world.

With its combination of dark fantasy exploration, systemic gameplay and Dungeons & Dragons-inspired magic, Warlock: Dungeons & Dragons is shaping up to offer a different take on the action-adventure genre. The game is currently in development for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and is scheduled to launch in 2027.
