Just one week remains before Apidya’ Special arrives digitally on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. The modern remake of the classic Amiga shoot-’em-up, developed by Team Apidya, launches on August 25, 2026.

First released in 1992, the original Apidya built a devoted following on the strength of its insect-themed fantasy world, punishing difficulty, and a soundtrack that fans still discuss decades later. Apidya’ Special rebuilds that experience from the ground up for modern platforms while holding onto the tone and challenge that made it an Amiga cult favourite in the first place.

Pre-orders for Apidya’ Special are now open on Nintendo Switch (eShop EU) and Xbox. To mark the final week before launch, publisher ININ Games has released a new trailer showing off features including two visual modes and a co-op mode, among other additions.

Team Apidya will also be on-site at Gamescom 2026, running from August 26 to 30 at Koelnmesse in Cologne, where fans can meet the developers and celebrate the launch in person. The team can be found in the retro area at Hall 10.2, Booth 6-8, for the duration of the show, with small goodies available at the booth while supplies last. Players who haven’t yet added the game to their wishlist can do so ahead of next week’s digital release on Steam.

Apidya’ Special is described as an authentic remake, completely rebuilt from scratch rather than emulated. Players can seamlessly switch between an HD widescreen presentation and the original home computer 4:3 format, and those chasing an even more nostalgic feel can enable optional CRT shaders, bloom, and scanline simulation.

The soundtrack gets particular attention as well. An exclusive Chris Hülsbeck OST spans two CDs, combining the original score with newly recorded studio versions alongside original Amiga recordings that helped define the series’ legendary audio identity. The remake also debuts previously unseen material to the public for the first time, including enhanced graphics that were originally designed for a console version of the game that never released.

Content has been expanded significantly for this version, with five distinct themed worlds, Meadow, Pond, Sewers, Cyber, and Lair, each holding up to five levels, for a total of 20 unique bosses and a number of hidden special stages. Randomized in-game events add further variety, including a “Night Mode” that swaps in new enemy sprites for a fresh challenge on repeat runs.

A new co-op mode also joins the package, letting a second player take control of a fully featured bee complete with its own set of weapons. Accessibility options round out the modernization, with adjustable difficulty settings intended to make the game approachable for players of all generations, including the original developers themselves.

Apidya’ Special launches digitally on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch on August 25, 2026. Pre-orders are live now on Nintendo Switch (EU) and Xbox, and the game can be wishlisted on PC via Steam. More information is available at ININGAMES.COM.
