SoulQuest is bringing its battle against the gods to a new platform, with SoulBlade Studio and indie.io confirming that the side-scrolling action game will launch on Nintendo Switch on September 3. The game has been available on Steam for the past four months, and its upcoming Switch release will mark its first appearance on a console.
In SoulQuest, players take on the role of Alys, whose husband Gwydre dies defending the village of Cetonia after it is destroyed in a single day. While the gods consider the matter settled, Alys refuses to accept his death and begins searching for a way to bring him back.
Her search leads her to Abanus, a druid who reveals that souls can be retrieved from the realm of the dead. There is one major catch, however. Alys will have to confront Morrigan, the goddess of death, and take the power necessary to restore her husband.
That sends Alys on a journey across the British Isles, where she will face members of the Celtic pantheon as she attempts to reclaim Gwydre’s soul. The game’s story combines elements of Celtic folklore and Arthurian mythology, with its pixel-art presentation drawing on the medieval setting and real-world geography of the British Isles.
Combat is a major part of the adventure, with SoulQuest featuring light and heavy attacks that can be combined into dozens of different combos. Players can also make use of magical abilities and powerful ultimate attacks, giving Alys plenty of options when dealing with the game’s enemies.
Battles can become particularly hectic as enemies arrive in waves, with the game also grading players on their performance. Ranks range from F through SSS, rewarding players for effectively combining attacks and abilities while dealing with the various threats thrown their way.
The game’s presentation is rounded out by a medieval-inspired soundtrack and pixel-art environments based on Celtic and Arthurian influences. Its bosses also draw from figures associated with Celtic mythology, giving Alys’ journey a suitably supernatural cast of opponents.
Since its Steam debut, SoulQuest has earned a Very Positive user rating, with players highlighting its combat system and story among the game’s notable features.
Nintendo Switch players won’t have much longer to wait to join Alys on her quest. SoulQuest launches on Nintendo Switch on September 3, while the game is already available on Steam.
