Tengo Project is bringing one of the NES era’s lesser-known shoot ’em ups back for a new generation with Cybernetic Attack: Final Mission, a 16-bit-style remake of S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team.
Known as Final Mission in Japan, the original game launched for the Nintendo Entertainment System in 1990 and challenged players to fight their way through a futuristic battlefield filled with enemy forces and hazards. More than three decades later, Tengo Project is giving the title a substantial visual overhaul while keeping its classic side-scrolling shoot ’em up foundation intact.
Rather than simply recreating the NES game with higher-resolution assets, Cybernetic Attack: Final Mission is being rebuilt with the kind of 16-bit pixel art that has become a signature of Tengo Project’s modern revivals. The studio has previously taken a similar approach with games such as Pocky & Rocky Reshrined and Shadow of the Ninja Reborn, updating older titles with detailed new pixel art while preserving the spirit of their original designs.
The remake will also introduce new characters and features, suggesting that Tengo Project isn’t treating Cybernetic Attack: Final Mission as a straightforward visual remaster. The company has yet to detail exactly how those additions will change the experience, but the project appears to be expanding on the original game rather than simply reproducing it.
For those unfamiliar with S.C.A.T., the original Special Cybernetic Attack Team was released in Japan as Final Mission on June 22, 1990. The NES shoot ’em up was developed during an era when side-scrolling shooters were a major part of the console’s library, making its return particularly fitting given Tengo Project’s focus on reviving classic action games.
The new remake will also have a broad selection of language options. Cybernetic Attack: Final Mission will support English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese.
Tengo Project has not yet announced which platforms the game will release on, and there is currently no release date. More information should be coming soon, however, as Cybernetic Attack: Final Mission will be playable at Tokyo Game Show 2026.
The event will take place at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, from September 17 through September 21, giving fans their first opportunity to see the remake in action. With Tengo Project’s track record of reworking classic games with modern pixel art, Cybernetic Attack: Final Mission could give an overlooked NES shooter a second chance to make an impression.
