Square Enix has finally put a date on the conclusion of its Final Fantasy VII remake project. During the latest PlayStation State of Play, the publisher confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Revelation will launch on April 8, 2027, bringing the next chapter of Cloud Strife’s story to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC.

Alongside the release date announcement, Square Enix debuted a new trailer and an extensive gameplay showcase that provide a much closer look at what players can expect from the highly anticipated finale.

This time around, the adventure is expanding considerably in scope. Final Fantasy VII Revelation will allow players to explore a vast open world with far fewer restrictions, with the Highwind airship serving as a major means of getting around the planet. The iconic airship will give Cloud and his companions the freedom to travel across the game’s world as they prepare for what could be their final confrontation with Sephiroth.

Chocobos will also play a larger role in exploration. Players will be able to ride Piko, a Chocobo who develops alongside the party and gains new abilities as the adventure progresses. Those upgrades will eventually allow Piko to take on new traversal and combat roles, giving players additional ways to navigate the world and deal with enemies.

Combat is also being expanded for the finale. Final Fantasy VII Revelation retains the hybrid combat system established by the previous games while introducing additional mechanics designed to give players more freedom when building their parties and developing their characters.

One of the biggest additions is the new FITS system, which allows characters to take on specialized roles based around Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner. These roles grant access to additional abilities and provide new ways to increase a character’s combat potential. During the gameplay presentation, Cid was shown using the Knight FITS role, while Vincent demonstrated the Summoner FITS role.

Cid and Vincent will both be playable characters in Final Fantasy VII Revelation, giving the party two more combat options as the story heads toward its climactic final chapter.

Players will also have considerably more control over who they take into battle. Active characters can be switched freely while exploring, and the party lineup can be changed at any time. This should make it easier to tailor the group to different encounters without forcing players to return to a specific menu or location.

Exploration itself is getting some new tricks as well. A grappling gun will allow characters to quickly reach rooftops and zip across parts of the environment that would otherwise be inaccessible. Combined with the expanded Chocobo mechanics and the Highwind, the new traversal options suggest that Final Fantasy VII Revelation is aiming to make its world considerably more interactive than the previous entries.

The game’s story will also offer more opportunities for player choice. Certain quests can be assigned to different members of the party, with those decisions capable of influencing how particular events and scenarios unfold. While Square Enix has not revealed the full extent of these changes, the system could give players another reason to experiment with different party combinations during their journey.

The story itself picks up with Cloud and his allies facing an increasingly desperate situation. Following the loss of a beloved companion and with Sephiroth moving closer to godlike power, the group takes to the skies aboard the Highwind in an attempt to prevent Meteor from destroying the planet.

With Final Fantasy VII Revelation positioned as the conclusion to this massive remake project, the stakes are considerably higher than they have been in the previous games. Square Enix is clearly treating the finale as a culmination of everything that has come before it, while still introducing new systems and mechanics to keep the final installment from simply feeling like a repeat of its predecessors.

Players looking to jump into the series before Revelation arrives will also have the option of picking up the first two games together. The Final Fantasy VII Remake Series Trilogy Edition is available digitally for $84.99 and includes Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, along with the Mecha-Chocobo & Moogle summon materia as a pre-order bonus for Revelation.

Both earlier games are currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. Players who are catching up can also make use of the Streamlined Progression options, which include features such as unlimited HP and MP, a constantly full ATB gauge and easier weapon ability acquisition.

Existing players will receive additional bonuses in Revelation depending on which previous games they have save data for. Save data from Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade unlocks the Chocobo & Moogle Summon Materia and a Remake weapon skin set, while Rebirth save data provides the Phoenix Summon Materia and a Rebirth weapon skin set.

Several editions of Final Fantasy VII Revelation will be available when the game launches. The physical Standard Edition will cost $69.99, while the $99.99 Deluxe Edition includes a mini soundtrack, artbook and Steelbook case. Select Day 1 editions will also include a Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy promotional card, with an Amazon-exclusive version adding a folded poster.

The centerpiece of the physical lineup is the $349.99 Collector’s Edition, which will be exclusive to the Square Enix Store. It includes everything from the Deluxe Edition alongside a premium statue depicting Cloud, Zack and Sephiroth. It will also include the Story Expansion Pass, which provides access to two planned story-focused DLC expansions.

The Collector’s Edition’s additional digital content includes the Reclaimant Choker, a Survival Set, the Nymphwing Bracelet, Risk Taker’s Choker, Mecha-Chocobo & Moogle Summon Materia and Polydroid Alexander Summoning Materia.

Digital players will have three editions to choose from. The Standard Edition costs $69.99, while the $99.99 Premium Edition includes the Story Expansion Pass and 24-hour early access. The $109.99 Premium Plus Edition adds the digital mini soundtrack and artbook, along with Polydroid Alexander, the Nymphwing Bracelet and Risk Taker’s Choker.

The Story Expansion Pass will also be sold separately at launch. Square Enix currently plans to release its two story DLCs between winter 2027 and spring 2028, although the company notes that the content and release schedule are subject to change.

Physical and digital pre-orders are now available, although digital pre-orders for the Nintendo Switch 2 version will open at a later date. The game will launch simultaneously across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC.

After years of anticipation, Final Fantasy VII Revelation now has a firm date attached to it. With the Highwind opening up the world, Cid and Vincent joining the playable roster, new combat systems arriving through FITS and player choices influencing parts of the adventure, Square Enix appears to be going all-in on making the final chapter the biggest entry in the trilogy yet.
