Square Enix has released a free demo for FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE, giving players an early opportunity to experience the upcoming HD-2D RPG ahead of its October 22 launch. The demo is now available on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam, and Xbox on PC, with progress carrying over to the full game.

The demo covers the game’s opening through the first chapter and offers roughly three to five hours of gameplay, meaning players can get a substantial introduction to the Kingdom of Grandshelt before the full adventure arrives. Best of all, any save data created during the demo can be transferred to the full version, allowing players to continue their journey without having to start over.

The demo announcement was accompanied by a new trailer shown during Sony’s State of Play presentation, which also delivered a particularly notable surprise for FINAL FANTASY fans. Sephiroth will appear in FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE as a powerful opponent that players can seek out and challenge. Those who manage to defeat him will be able to unlock a special reward, adding an optional challenge for players looking to test the limits of their party.

Sephiroth isn’t the only familiar face making an appearance. FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is designed as a celebration of the franchise’s history, bringing together elements and characters from across the series while presenting them through a distinctive HD-2D visual style.

The game marks the first time the FINAL FANTASY series has adopted the HD-2D presentation popularized by titles such as OCTOPATH TRAVELER and TRIANGLE STRATEGY. Rather than simply recreating the appearance of older FINAL FANTASY games, FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE combines pixel-art characters and environments with modern visual effects, creating a presentation that aims to bridge the series’ classic roots with contemporary RPG design.

At the heart of the adventure is a strategic turn-based combat system with modern additions, alongside a world filled with familiar FINAL FANTASY staples. Chocobos, airships and Espers all return, while characters including Cloud, Tidus and the Warrior of Light are among the series icons players can encounter during their journey.

The story itself draws from the first story arc of FINAL FANTASY BRAVE EXVIUS, though Square Enix says the new game goes considerably further than simply adapting the mobile title. FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE has been extensively rebuilt and refined as a console-quality RPG, with the original material expanded into a more substantial standalone experience.

That approach could make the game particularly interesting for longtime fans of FINAL FANTASY who are looking for something that feels nostalgic without simply revisiting one of the franchise’s existing adventures. The combination of a new story, classic characters, turn-based combat and HD-2D visuals gives FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE its own identity while still leaning heavily into the series’ history.

Players who want to see what Square Enix has in store can jump into the free demo now and experience the beginning of the adventure for themselves. With several hours of content included and save-data progression carrying directly into the full release, there is little reason for curious players to wait until launch day.

FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE launches on October 22, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam and Xbox on PC. Pre-orders are currently available across all platforms.
