KONAMI has pulled back the curtain a little further on Rev. NOiR, and things are looking increasingly grim for its young heroes. The upcoming RPG has received two new trailers ahead of its 2027 release, offering a deeper look at its story, characters and fast-paced combat system.
The Story Trailer introduces more of Asch and Finé, two young heroes thrown together as a catastrophic phenomenon known as lightfall threatens to wipe out everything in its path. Meanwhile, the new Battle Trailer shifts the focus to combat, showing off a system that combines real-time action with strategic decision-making and allows players’ choices to influence how they fight.
Some of the new footage was showcased during KONAMI PRESS START, where the game’s producer also offered a closer look at the world and systems behind the original RPG. While Rev. NOiR is still some distance from release, the latest trailers provide a much better idea of what KONAMI has been cooking up.
And whatever it is, humanity is not exactly having a great time.
The world of Rev. NOiR has long been governed by the Determinant, a celestial force that guides humanity through a series of astral ordinances designed to preserve peace. That order is now beginning to crumble as lightfall returns, bringing a deadly wave of destruction that kills anything unfortunate enough to be caught in its path.
As another lightfall season approaches, a quiet boy named Asch encounters Finé and her guard, Diana, in a remote village. What begins as a chance meeting quickly sets him on a much larger journey.
Asch has been guided by an astral ordinance commanding him to “save many people,” leading him to join Finé in an attempt to stop the catastrophe. Their target is the mysterious provitons, which are believed to be the source of lightfall. If they can defeat them, they may finally have a chance to put an end to the phenomenon.
Of course, things are rarely that simple.
A major part of Rev. NOiR’s story revolves around the question of whether the characters are truly destined to follow the paths laid out for them. As Asch and Finé travel across the world, the pair will have to contend with forces that appear to have already determined their fate while also making choices that could ultimately shape their own futures.
Finé herself is at the center of that conflict. A young cleric capable of wielding the Rainbow Astria, she possesses a power said to be capable of bringing an end to lightfall. Despite the enormous responsibility placed on her shoulders, Finé is cheerful, curious and eager to see the world beyond the lands she knows.
Her journey began alongside Diana, a soldier of the Astrian Order’s Holy Capital Garrison who serves as her protector. Diana deeply respects Finé and her dedication to the role of “Saint,” while her own powerful sense of justice drives her to protect those who cannot protect themselves. She is also more than willing to put herself in harm’s way when the situation calls for it.
The pair will eventually cross paths with Cross, a gunner from the Lysrian City Guards. Assigned by his captain to guide Finé and the others, Cross finds himself pulled deeper into their dangerous mission. Despite his profession, he is described as compassionate and soft-hearted, making it difficult for him to simply walk away when someone needs help.
These relationships will be important as the group ventures further into a world on the brink of destruction, but Rev. NOiR isn’t relying entirely on its story to carry the experience.
The new Battle Trailer puts the spotlight on the game’s combat, which blends quick action with tactical decision-making. Players won’t simply be mashing their way through encounters, either. Fighting styles can evolve based on the decisions players make, suggesting that the choices made outside of battle could have an impact on how players approach fights.
That could give Rev. NOiR’s combat a welcome layer of flexibility. KONAMI hasn’t revealed every detail of the system just yet, but the latest footage makes it clear that the game wants players to think about their decisions rather than simply react to whatever enemy happens to be standing in front of them.
It is an interesting fit for a story so heavily concerned with destiny.
On one side, Asch and Finé are being pulled along by prophecies, astral ordinances and forces that seemingly dictate what is supposed to happen. On the other, the game’s mechanics are putting decisions directly into the player’s hands. Whether those two ideas ultimately feed into each other remains to be seen, but it gives Rev. NOiR an intriguing foundation to build upon.
With its colorful fantasy setting, looming apocalypse and cast of characters facing futures that may already have been written for them, Rev. NOiR is beginning to carve out an identity of its own. There are still plenty of unanswered questions surrounding the world, the true nature of lightfall and exactly what the mysterious provitons are, but KONAMI is clearly ready to start showing more of its hand.
And considering the fate awaiting this world, the sooner Asch and Finé figure out what they’re up against, the better.
Rev. NOiR is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. The RPG is currently available to wishlist ahead of its release.
