Dlala Studios has announced Murals, a new isometric action adventure that puts a twisted spin on familiar fairy tales and fables. The game combines fast-paced, customizable combat with hand-painted environments and bizarre reinterpretations of classic stories. It is currently scheduled to launch for PC via Steam in 2027.
“[It] does look really, really nice. Thank you,” said Dlala Studios CEO and game director AJ Grand-Scutton. “We’ve been really focused on making sure that the combat feels great and gives players the freedom to experiment and find their own unique setups to battle our baddies.”
Grand-Scutton added that the team has “poured our hearts and souls into Murals” and said he is exceptionally proud of what the studio has accomplished, although he jokingly admitted that he may simply stick his fingers in his ears and hum the Community theme if players dislike the game.
Dlala Studios head of publishing Marcus Purvis also highlighted the significance of Murals for the studio, noting that it is the first title in more than a decade that Dlala has developed around an original intellectual property. The studio is also publishing the game itself, giving the team greater creative control over the project.
In Murals, players awaken inside a twisted fairy tale castle with no memory of who they are or how they arrived there. Their only companion is Loaf, a sentient sketch who quickly reveals that there is no obvious way out and that strange monsters known as The Distorted have appeared.
Things only get stranger from there.
The world of Murals takes familiar fairy tale characters and throws them into wildly unexpected situations. Sleeping Beauty hasn’t slept in weeks, Rapunzel’s hair has seemingly turned against her, and Rumpelstiltskin has developed an unusual passion for theater. These are recognizable stories, but very much not the versions players grew up with.
Combat will allow players to experiment with a wide variety of unusual weapons, ranging from talking swords and dwarven gloves to mystical dragon blasters. Melee and ranged weapons can be combined while battling through crooked castles, deceptive forests, living mazes and other distorted locations.
Players can further customize their combat setups with Eeries, powerful trinkets that can dramatically alter how weapons and encounters work. These effects can include adding poison to a Wolfhammer or lightning to Medusa’s shield, while Magic Dave’s Vending Machine of Delights promises to provide even more bizarre possibilities.
The adventure will also feature distorted versions of legendary figures from familiar folklore. Players will battle their way toward a final confrontation with The Creator, a seemingly calm but deadly artist who has been watching their progress throughout the journey.
Dlala is also promising a fully voiced cast of characters who have been reimagined far beyond their traditional fairy tale counterparts. Complementing the strange world and combat will be a fully orchestrated score from award-winning composer David Housden.
Murals is currently in development for PC and is scheduled to launch via Steam in 2027. Dlala Studios plans to showcase the game for the first time at Gamescom 2026.
