Top Hat Studios has added another unusual indie project to its publishing lineup, and this time, the threat comes from a computer virus that might be a little too adorable for its own good. My Ransomware Can’t Be This Cute?! is a new roguelike deckbuilder from developer The Seppuku Commission, combining card-flipping mechanics, logical deduction, and risk-taking with a decidedly unconventional computer virus antagonist.
The premise begins with players downloading a suspicious executable file, only to discover that their computer has been hijacked by Ransomware-chan, a sentient piece of malware. Rather than simply deleting the troublesome program, players will have to beat the game she has prepared for them, turning an otherwise familiar cybersecurity nightmare into a battle of probability, deduction, and nerve.
At the heart of the experience is a card-flipping system that challenges players to identify dangerous cards hidden across the board. Carefully studying the available information and calculating the odds can help uncover the safest moves, but those willing to gamble can also throw caution aside and flip cards in pursuit of a million-dollar prize. Naturally, the consequences of getting too greedy can be rather brutal.
There is more to the experience than simply guessing which cards are safe, however. Players will be able to draft and upgrade their decks, discover powerful combinations, and manipulate the game’s probability systems to improve their chances of survival. Ransomware-chan also isn’t content to sit quietly on the sidelines, with her personality, taunts, fourth-wall breaks, and ability to interfere with the game’s retro-inspired computer interface adding another layer of mischief to each run.
My Ransomware Can’t Be This Cute?! also embraces a distinctly nostalgic visual presentation, recreating the look and feel of an old computer operating system with a colourful, early-2000s-inspired aesthetic. Between unpredictable malware behaviour, different card interactions, and numerous possible deck archetypes, The Seppuku Commission is promising plenty of reasons to return for another attempt.
Top Hat Studios will publish My Ransomware Can’t Be This Cute?! when it launches on PC via Steam. A release date has not yet been announced.
