Retro horror fans have another unsettling anthology to keep an eye on, as Top Hat Studios has announced that it will publish Spooky Tales, an upcoming horror game developed by Liminal Road. Combining several different horror subgenres with gritty PSX-inspired visuals, the anthology promises four distinct experiences that draw inspiration from everything from classic slashers to Japanese body horror.

Rather than focusing on a single type of horror, Spooky Tales brings together four nightmares, each with its own identity and atmosphere. Players will encounter 1920s-inspired pulp horror, Japanese body horror, found-footage terror, and the nostalgic charm of 1980s VHS horror. Holding everything together is a charismatic undead host with a morbid sense of humour, introducing each story as players venture through the anthology.

Among the featured stories is The Abyss-Borne, which takes players to a strange coastal village where something ancient lurks beneath the water. Armed with a harpoon, players must venture into the ocean to hunt its inhabitants, although the deeper they go, the more apparent it becomes that they are not alone.

The other stories explore different corners of the horror genre, including an unsettling mystery involving a new student and an occult club, a ghost-hunting television crew investigating an abandoned soda factory, and an 80s-inspired slasher scenario that turns a teenage pizza party into a fight for survival. The variety should give each chapter its own personality rather than making the anthology feel like four variations of the same experience.

Beyond its retro presentation, Spooky Tales is described as a narrative-driven game featuring interactive mini-games, with its visual direction drawing heavily from the original PlayStation era and weird fiction. Its mixture of horror storytelling, unusual scenarios, and different gameplay elements could make it an interesting addition to the growing selection of indie horror experiences embracing older aesthetics.

Although Spooky Tales has previously been introduced with a playable PC demo, the latest announcement brings Top Hat Studios aboard as its publisher. The game is currently planned for PC via Steam, with a release date yet to be announced.
