Electronic Arts may be preparing to bring one of its most cinematic space combat games back into the spotlight, as Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger appears set to receive a new edition featuring restored footage and several modern enhancements.
The project was revealed by EA producer Jim Vessella during a presentation at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, where a slide outlined plans for a Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger – 30th Anniversary Edition. The restoration effort follows Vessella’s discovery of more than 600 source tapes while digitizing EA’s video archive, including the original footage used for the game’s full-motion video sequences.
According to details shared by Video Game History Foundation board member Steve Lin, the upcoming edition is expected to feature both the original master footage and upscaled versions of the game’s FMVs, alongside gameplay running at up to 60 frames per second, controller support, and a Community Enhancement Patch. The presentation also lists Steam, GOG, and the EA app as platforms for the release, with Kilrathi Saga integration among its planned features.
Originally released in 1994, Wing Commander III helped push the series’ cinematic ambitions further with a Hollywood-style cast that included Mark Hamill, John Rhys-Davies, and Malcolm McDowell. Recovering the original footage could make a substantial difference to the experience, preserving the game’s live-action sequences while offering a clearer alternative to the heavily compressed video that players have encountered in existing versions.
Despite the anniversary branding, the project arrives more than three decades after the original game’s debut. No release date or pricing details have been announced so far, leaving fans waiting for further information about when they can return to the cockpit.
