Dotemu has surprise-launched Blasterbug: Last Bug Standing!, a new free-to-play party game that brings colourful bug heroes, explosive arenas and chaotic multiplayer battles to PC via Steam.

The game was announced and released during the Pixel Arcadia retro showcase, with Dotemu describing the launch as a thank-you to retro gaming fans around the world. Blasterbug: Last Bug Standing! is available now as a free download on Steam, with support for local multiplayer matches featuring up to eight players.

The announcement and launch trailer can be viewed below.

Blasterbug: Last Bug Standing! takes inspiration from classic arcade action games while adding its own bug-themed spin to the formula. Players compete across constantly changing arenas, using Pome-grenades, special attacks and environmental hazards to eliminate their opponents and become the last bug standing.

The game features five different multiplayer modes. Death Battle challenges players to survive until they are the last bug remaining, while Coin Battle rewards the player who collects the most coins. Crown Battle revolves around holding onto a crown, Paint Battle has players spreading their colour across the arena, and Party Battle combines the game’s various modes into one chaotic multiplayer experience.

There are 15 playable characters to choose from, with each bug featuring its own gameplay style and special attacks. Matches take place across 15 bug-filled areas, with each arena introducing its own hazards and gameplay twists that players can use to their advantage.

These environments include Bugville, the Sewers and the Kitchen, where players will have to contend with everything from changing conditions to a giant spoon capable of disrupting a match. Learning how each arena works can be just as important as mastering the game’s combat mechanics.

Dotemu has also introduced a premium crossover DLC pack featuring Absolum, the acclaimed action roguelike from the studio. The Blasterbug: Last Bug Standing! Absolum Pack adds Galandra as a playable character, along with the Jaroba arena inspired by the world of Absolum.

Galandra brings her massive sword and Necrotic Wave ability into the bug-filled battles, giving players another character to master. The Absolum Pack is available now for $1.99.

With its free base game, local multiplayer support for up to eight players and quick arcade-style matches, Blasterbug: Last Bug Standing! is designed around the kind of pick-up-and-play experience that can make a party game easy to jump into.

Players can download Blasterbug: Last Bug Standing! for free on Steam now.
