Clear River Games, in cooperation with Square Enix, has officially announced a remaster of the classic 1995 action RPG Terranigma. The long-awaited revival will bring Quintet’s acclaimed Super Nintendo title to modern platforms for the first time, giving a new generation of players the opportunity to experience one of the most overlooked RPGs of the 16-bit era.

Terranigma will launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.

The announcement marks the first official re-release of Terranigma since its original launch more than 30 years ago. The game was developed by Quintet and originally published by Enix, with manga artist Kamui Fujiwara serving as its character designer.

Terranigma Finally Returns

Originally released in Japan in 1995 for the Super Famicom, Terranigma follows Ark, a young boy who lives in the underground village of Crysta.

After opening a forbidden door and encountering the mysterious creature Yomi, Ark accidentally causes the people of his village to become frozen. He is then tasked with resurrecting the continents of the surface world before eventually setting out on a much larger journey involving the resurrection of life itself.

The game combines traditional role-playing elements with real-time action combat. Players control Ark directly as he explores dungeons, battles enemies, solves environmental challenges, and discovers new areas.

Unlike many RPGs of its era, Terranigma places a strong emphasis on action. Ark can use his spear to perform standard attacks, jumping attacks, dashes, and other techniques, while enemies move and attack in real time.

The result is a combat system that remains remarkably accessible decades after the original release.

A Classic That Never Received A Modern Release

Despite its reputation among retro RPG fans, Terranigma has remained unusually difficult to access.

The original game was released in Japan in 1995 and later received a European release in 1996, but it never officially launched in North America. The game also never received a modern port, remaster, or remake before this announcement.

That makes the upcoming release particularly significant for fans who have spent years asking Square Enix to revisit the game.

Clear River Games general manager Ali Manzurin described Terranigma as an undiscovered gem that has been inaccessible to many Western players for decades.

The publisher’s goal is to bring classic games back to modern audiences, and Terranigma represents one of the most notable additions to that effort.

Kamui Fujiwara Returns To The World Of Terranigma

Kamui Fujiwara, who designed the characters for the original Terranigma, also expressed his excitement about the game’s return.

Fujiwara was heavily involved in the original game’s visual identity, helping design not only its characters but also elements of its world and settings.

The artist hopes the game’s themes of creation and destruction, humanity, and the nature of the world will continue to resonate with modern players.

Rather than simply treating Terranigma as a piece of gaming history, the new release is intended to give the classic another opportunity to connect with audiences today.

A Unique Action RPG

One of Terranigma’s biggest strengths is its combination of traditional RPG progression and fast-paced action.

Players take direct control of Ark rather than relying on menu-based combat. His spear can be used for standard attacks, jumping attacks, dashes, and other moves, allowing battles to unfold in real time.

The game also features exploration-focused environments filled with enemies, secrets, dungeons, and challenges.

This approach helped Terranigma stand apart from many other Japanese RPGs released during the Super Nintendo era.

Designed By A Legendary Manga Artist

The game’s distinctive visual style comes from Kamui Fujiwara, whose expressive character designs were translated into detailed pixel art for the original release.

The soundtrack is another major part of Terranigma’s legacy. Its music has remained highly regarded among fans of 1990s RPGs, with its melancholic and atmospheric compositions complementing the game’s themes and story.

Together, the visuals, music, combat, and world-building helped make Terranigma one of Quintet’s most ambitious projects.

Creation And Destruction

Terranigma is also notable for the themes that run throughout its story.

Quintet’s games from the 1990s frequently explored ideas surrounding creation, destruction, life, death, and humanity’s relationship with the world. Terranigma brought many of these ideas together on a much larger scale.

The story begins with Ark restoring the continents before gradually expanding into a much broader narrative about the development of life and civilization.

This combination of grand themes and traditional action RPG gameplay helped Terranigma develop a cult following despite its limited availability.

Terranigma Launches In 2027

The Terranigma remaster will launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam.

The game will also be available in both digital and physical formats.

More details about the remaster, including its specific release date and additional features, are expected to be revealed at a later date.

For fans who have spent decades waiting for Terranigma to return, the wait is finally coming to an end. The classic Quintet action RPG is officially making its way back to modern gaming platforms in 2027.
