Turok: Origins is taking aim at more than longtime fans of the classic dinosaur-hunting franchise. With Saber Interactive preparing to bring the series back in 2027, the developer is also looking toward players who may have never picked up a Turok game before, and co-op is playing a major role in that strategy.

Speaking with IGN at gamescom 2026, Saber development chief Tim Willits discussed the challenge of bringing back a franchise that has been around for decades while making sure Turok: Origins can stand on its own for a newer audience. Rather than simply recreate the experience of the original Nintendo 64 games, Saber wants to combine recognizable elements with a modern action experience that can be enjoyed alone or with friends.

That includes familiar callbacks for longtime fans, alongside features designed to make Turok: Origins more approachable to people discovering the series for the first time. Willits specifically pointed to the game’s co-op support as an important part of that effort, with the full campaign playable solo or with up to two additional players.

The approach also fits the game’s larger shift from the first-person dinosaur shooter roots of the original games into a third-person sci-fi action shooter. Players will take on dinosaurs, alien enemies, and enormous bosses while using an assortment of futuristic weapons and abilities, with three different character classes offering their own combat specialties.

Saber has previously described Turok: Origins as a new evolution of the franchise rather than a straightforward revival, with the story taking players across different planets and locations as they uncover the mysteries surrounding the Lost Lands. Players can also collect Echoes from enemies and the environment to unlock new Turok powers and upgrade their abilities.

The developer’s comments suggest that the goal isn’t to leave the older Turok audience behind, but instead to use the series’ recognizable ingredients as a foundation for something that can attract players who weren’t around for its N64 heyday. Dinosaurs, oversized weapons, strange alien worlds, and massive boss encounters remain at the heart of the experience, while co-op gives the new game another way to bring people into the franchise.

Turok: Origins is currently scheduled to launch in Spring 2027 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
