Timothy Zahn is heading to the final frontier for a new Star Trek mystery, with IDW Publishing announcing Star Trek: Roc’s Egg, an original graphic novel set aboard Deep Space Nine. The new story is scheduled to release in October 2027 and will see Zahn team up with artist Ángel Hernández for an adventure built around a mysterious artifact, a murder, and plenty of secrets hiding aboard the station.
Best known for his bestselling Star Wars: Thrawn trilogy, as well as his work as a creative consultant on the Disney+ series Ahsoka, Zahn has a long history with science fiction and has previously been recognized with a Hugo Award for Cascade Point. His connection to Star Trek goes back even further, with the author noting that his association with the franchise began with the original television series in 1966.
Roc’s Egg will take Zahn into the world of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, where a mysterious artifact known as a Roc’s Egg arrives at the station and is apparently destroyed while in transit. That seemingly straightforward incident leads to a Federation JAG investigation, but the case quickly becomes considerably stranger as the team uncovers a secret auction, wealthy collectors, dangerous criminals, and an artifact that may not be quite what it appears to be.
Things take an even darker turn when murder enters the picture, setting up a mystery in which virtually everyone aboard the station appears to have something to hide. With Deep Space Nine providing the backdrop, Roc’s Egg looks to lean into the station’s more intrigue-heavy side while giving Zahn plenty of room to build a story around competing agendas and a mystery that goes well beyond a missing piece of treasure.
Hernández, whose previous work includes Star Trek: Voyager – Homecoming, Godzilla: Here There Be Aliens, and Spider-Man, will provide the artwork for the graphic novel. The project also reunites Star Trek with one of science fiction’s most recognizable authors as IDW continues its celebration of the franchise’s 60th anniversary.
Star Trek: Roc’s Egg is currently scheduled to launch in October 2027.
