The Royal Writ has officially brought its blend of medieval strategy, roguelike deckbuilding and dark humour to consoles. Developed by Save Sloth Studios and published by Yogscast Games, the game is now available on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch, while Xbox players can also jump in through Xbox Game Pass.
The Royal Writ puts players in command of a charming animal army and challenges them to push their forces toward the enemy gates across one to three lanes. Each turn is a balancing act between building up base power and taking advantage of multiplication modifiers, with the ultimate goal of reducing the opposing base’s health to zero.
Of course, things can go badly very quickly. Permadeath means that when one of your fighters reaches the enemy base or falls victim to one of the battlefield’s hazards, they are permanently removed from your deck. Players will therefore need to experiment with different cards and synergies while trying to build the perfect army for each run.
With its picturebook-inspired visuals, ruthless tactical gameplay and appropriately dark sense of humour, The Royal Writ has already found an audience on PC, where it currently holds a Very Positive rating on Steam. Now, console players can see if they have what it takes to lead their animal forces to victory without losing too many soldiers along the way.
