Team Lazerbeam and Devolver Digital have announced that first-person double deckbuilder Shroom and Gloom will launch on Steam Early Access on September 10, 2026. A new deep-dive video from the developers has also been released, offering a closer look at the game’s unusual combination of deck-building, dungeon exploration, and roguelike mechanics.
Set within a series of hand-drawn dungeons, Shroom and Gloom challenges players to explore the mysterious underground realm known as The Gloom while battling hordes of grotesque fungal enemies. The game features two separate decks, with players using each for different aspects of their journey.
The Explore deck is used to interact with the environment, allowing players to reveal new areas, search for items, break obstacles, unlock paths, ignite objects, feed creatures, and repair various elements found throughout the dungeons. Meanwhile, the Combat deck is focused on dealing with the game’s many enemies, giving players an assortment of attacks that can be upgraded and combined to create increasingly powerful effects.
The game’s card system is designed around experimentation, with hundreds of cards available and the ability to continually modify and improve them. Even basic starting cards can eventually be transformed into powerful attacks, while rarer cards can be developed into devastating weapons capable of dramatically changing the course of a run.
Combat also incorporates the game’s strange approach to its fungal enemies. Every enemy encountered can be eaten after being defeated, allowing players to restore health or use their remains as ingredients for soups that provide additional benefits.
Outside of combat, Shroom and Gloom features a distinctive visual style that combines hand-drawn artwork with detailed 3D environments. The result is a surreal world filled with strange mushrooms, winding caves, and bizarre creatures.
The Early Access version will also include a substantial amount of content, with hundreds of cards, numerous unique enemies, and a progression system designed to give players new options across multiple runs.
Shroom and Gloom launches on Steam Early Access on September 10, 2026. A demo is currently available on Steam, giving players the opportunity to try the game’s unusual blend of dungeon crawling and deck-building ahead of its Early Access release.
