Ziggurat Interactive has officially announced Sanitarium Enhanced, a modernized version of DreamForge Intertainment’s acclaimed 1998 psychological horror adventure. The enhanced edition will bring the cult classic to modern platforms for the first time with new quality-of-life features, controller support, bonus content, and other improvements.

Sanitarium Enhanced is currently scheduled to launch in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.

A Classic Horror Adventure Returns

Originally released for PC in 1998, Sanitarium quickly earned a reputation for its disturbing atmosphere, surreal imagery, and psychological horror. The game also received widespread recognition during its original release, including being named Adventure Game of the Year.

The story begins with the protagonist awakening inside a decaying asylum with no memory of who he is or how he arrived there. His face is hidden beneath bandages, and escaping from his cell only leads to an increasingly bizarre journey through a series of nightmare worlds.

As the story progresses, players will encounter disturbing locations filled with deformed children, insect-like mutations, grotesque circus performers, and other unsettling environments. Exploring these areas and solving puzzles gradually reveals more about the protagonist’s identity and the events surrounding his mysterious disappearance.

The surreal nature of Sanitarium remains one of its defining characteristics, with each chapter introducing a new environment and its own disturbing mysteries.

New Features and Improvements

While Sanitarium Enhanced is intended to preserve the original game’s distinctive atmosphere and adventure gameplay, Ziggurat Interactive is adding several modern improvements.

The enhanced edition will support widescreen resolutions during gameplay, allowing the classic adventure to make better use of modern displays. Players will also be able to use a controller for the first time, making the game more accessible on consoles and PC.

An optional hint mode has also been added to help players locate important interactable objects when they become stuck. This should make some of the game’s more challenging puzzles easier to navigate without fundamentally changing the experience.

Other quality-of-life additions include an optional movement speed toggle, while legacy bugs and other issues from the original release are also being addressed.

Bonus Content Included

Sanitarium Enhanced will also feature an extras gallery containing additional material from the game’s original development.

Ziggurat Interactive says the gallery will include never-before-seen material from DreamForge Intertainment’s development team, giving longtime fans an opportunity to learn more about how the cult classic was created.

The enhanced edition will also include Steam Deck optimizations for PC players, further adapting the adventure for modern hardware.
