Ziggurat Interactive has officially announced Sanitarium Enhanced, a modernized version of DreamForge Intertainment’s acclaimed 1998 psychological horror adventure. The enhanced edition will bring the cult classic to modern platforms with new quality-of-life features, controller support, bonus content, and other improvements.

Sanitarium Enhanced is scheduled to launch in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, Epic Games Store, and GOG.

Originally released for PC in 1998, Sanitarium earned a reputation for its disturbing atmosphere, surreal imagery, and psychological horror. The game also received significant recognition during its original release, including being named Adventure Game of the Year.

The story begins with the protagonist awakening inside a decaying asylum with no memory of who he is or how he arrived there. Disfigured and suffering from amnesia, he must escape his cell and begin a strange journey through a series of increasingly disturbing nightmare worlds.

As the adventure progresses, players will explore locations filled with deformed children, insect-like mutations, grotesque circus performers, and other unsettling environments. Each chapter introduces new mysteries as the protagonist attempts to piece together the fractured truth surrounding his identity.

The surreal nature of Sanitarium remains one of its defining characteristics, with its disturbing imagery and bizarre settings helping establish the game as a cult classic among fans of psychological horror and point-and-click adventures.

Sanitarium Enhanced will preserve the original adventure while introducing several improvements designed for modern players. Widescreen resolution will now be supported during gameplay, allowing the classic title to better accommodate contemporary displays.

The enhanced edition will also feature full controller support, making it possible to play the adventure with a gamepad for the first time. An optional hint mode will provide assistance when players have difficulty finding important interactable objects, while an optional movement speed toggle will provide another quality-of-life improvement.

Ziggurat Interactive is also addressing legacy bugs and other issues found in the original release. PC players will receive Steam Deck optimizations, making the classic horror adventure better suited to Valve’s handheld hardware.

The release will additionally include an extras gallery featuring bonus material from the original development of Sanitarium. According to Ziggurat Interactive, the gallery will contain never-before-seen material from DreamForge Intertainment’s development team, giving longtime fans a closer look at the creation of the cult classic.

With its combination of psychological horror, surreal environments, puzzle-solving, and a mystery surrounding its protagonist, Sanitarium remains one of the more memorable adventure games of the late 1990s. The enhanced edition provides an opportunity for longtime fans to revisit the game while introducing its unusual world to a new audience.
