Rick and Morty is a TV series that was created for Adult Swim which was originally a programming block for Cartoon Network. This programming block catered to a more mature audience when compared to it’s majority audience which was kids. I could dive into the history of Adult Swim but I will focus on the show for which this set was made.
The show follows Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith as they navigate the events that unfold before them each day. Whether it’s an alien coming to exact revenge on Rick for destroying their life, an intergalactic ice cream run, or a mishap with alien technology due to Morty being curious, there is never a dull moment in the series.
Though the show’s main characters are Rick and Morty, the show also consists of the rest of the Smith family which are Morty’s parents Beth and Jerry, and his sister Summer. The show will sometimes center on one or more of those characters but will always incorporate either Rick and/or Morty in some way.
As previously stated, the show is running on Adult Swim and it’s very apparent as to why that is. The show depicts the use of alcohol, drugs, and a lot of sexual references and dialogue. Though there isn’t much if any nudity in the show, there are plenty of sexualized events that happen which border on disturbing. Not disturbing in a taboo way, but more along the lines of what were they thinking kind of way.
Rick and Morty: The Complete Seasons 1-6 Blu-ray set comes in a nice package that features one case with a slipcover/box. This is a six-disc set with each disc having ten episodes each, with the exception of the sixth disc actually having eleven episodes. In addition to the episodes, they all include special features and all have commentary throughout each episode for you to enjoy. Special features outside of the commentary for each episode will differ between the discs but offer behind-the-scenes featurettes, alternate endings, shorts, and deleted scenes.
The set provided to our site for this review includes a limited edition poster that depicts a rather cute and deadly character from the series. The poster provided along with the front cover of the plastic case this set comes with is that of Mr. Frundles. For those that don’t know, Mr. Frundles is a deadly parasitic alien that infects everything in its path as a means to clone itself and take over whatever planet it’s unleashed on. While I get the humor they were going for here with the depiction of this cute and deadly character, I would have much preferred a poster and front cover depicting an epic scene from the series. If not a scene, something that was made specifically for the set. Mr. Frundles is cute and kind of funny, it feels rather lazy when you consider the price of this set.
You can currently purchase this set as either a DVD or a Blu-ray Box set. The Blu-ray set which was provided for our review, retails for $129.99 in the US and $119 in Canada. The DVD set retails for $114.99 in the US and $99.99 in Canada.
If you’re a die-hard Rick and Morty fan like I am, you’re going to love everything that this set has to offer, regardless of the format you choose to purchase it on. If you’re looking for a fun, adult-oriented cartoon to binge on a long weekend, this is going to be a set you’re going to want to look at picking up.
Either way, you can’t go wrong with this set. It’s a good price with a ton of awesome features and is overall a wonderful series and one I would definitely encourage you to check out.
