LEVEL-5 has announced Professor Layton and the Curious Village Remake, bringing the first entry in the long-running puzzle adventure series to modern platforms. Originally released for Nintendo DS in February 2007, the remake will launch for PlayStation 5, Switch 2, Switch, and PC via Steam in 2027.
Professor Layton and the Curious Village follows the famous archaeologist and his young apprentice Luke as they travel to the remote village of St. Mystere. The pair have been summoned by the widow of a wealthy baron, whose will reveals that a valuable family treasure known as the Golden Apple is hidden somewhere in the village. Whoever discovers it will inherit the Reinhold Estate, sending Layton and Luke on a mystery-filled search through the town.
The remake will give the original adventure a significant visual overhaul, with the characters reimagined in 3D and the village redesigned to provide greater depth and more immersive exploration. Its animated scenes will also receive high-resolution, widescreen presentation, allowing longtime fans to revisit the story with updated visuals while introducing the adventure to a new audience.
Puzzle design for the remake is once again being supervised by Akira Tago, the author of the Japanese puzzle book series Atama no Taisou, or “Head Gymnastics.” Tago, who was a professor emeritus at Chiba University, was known for creating original puzzles alongside his research in psychology and produced numerous bestselling books during his lifetime.
LEVEL-5 says the remake will offer longtime fans a new way to experience Layton and Luke’s first adventure while giving newcomers an opportunity to discover the puzzles and mystery that started the series.
