The psychological horror of Mouthwashing is expanding beyond the confines of the doomed freighter Tulpar, with the acclaimed indie horror game now available on consoles and Xbox Game Pass. The simultaneous launch comes alongside an announcement that Sony Pictures’ Screen Gems is developing a feature film adaptation, bringing Wrong Organ’s unsettling sci-fi horror story to the big screen.

The Mouthwashing movie will be directed by Karyn Kusama (Jennifer’s Body, Yellowjackets), with Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, The Black Phone), C. Robert Cargill, and Vince Cheng producing under their Crooked Highway banner. Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay (The Invitation) are attached to write the screenplay. Plot details are being kept under wraps, but the involvement of this creative team makes the adaptation an interesting prospect, particularly given the game’s unconventional storytelling and psychological horror.

Originally released on PC in 2024, Mouthwashing quickly established itself as one of the more memorable independent horror releases of recent years. Developed by Wrong Organ and published by CRITICAL REFLEX, the game has earned an 88 Metacritic score and Overwhelmingly Positive user reviews on Steam. It has also picked up awards for Best Narrative and Players’ Choice at the Horror Game Awards, alongside Best Hidden Gem at the New York Game Awards. Its popularity has extended well beyond traditional gaming audiences, with nearly one million PC sales, more than 60 million YouTube views, and almost one billion TikTok views.

For those who have yet to experience it, Mouthwashing follows the five-member crew of the Pony Express freighter Tulpar after the ship goes catastrophically off course, leaving everyone aboard stranded with dwindling supplies. As starvation, isolation, paranoia, and increasingly disturbing hallucinations take hold, the crew’s situation becomes progressively more desperate. What begins as a struggle to survive gradually becomes something much more disturbing, as the truth behind the disaster and the people aboard the ship comes into focus.

Mouthwashing is available now on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Xbox on PC for $12.99. The game is also included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Premium, and PC Game Pass, while the Steam version is currently discounted by 40% for a limited time.
