Lost Fallout Game Van Buren Rebuilt and Playable In New Mod

ByJonathan Balofsky

Jul 10, 2024
A big what if for fans of Fallout is Fallout 3. Specifically, the original version of the game that was code named Van Buren, but was cancelled in 2003 when Interplay was having difficulties. The Fallout 3 we did get ended up being a very different game, while some of Van Buren’s ideas would be reused in Fallout: New Vegas.

Fans have long wanted to play Van Buren as it was intended, and thanks to modders we are a it closer to being able to do so. This is thanks to the mod project Fallout Yesterday, a massively ambitious project that works to recreate Van Buren as best as possible. It still is not the real Van Buren obviously, but as closer as we can get for now.

The mod itself is actually a total conversion mod for Fallout 2 that adds new characters, quests, story missions, weapons, and items that are based on what the Fallout community has found out about Van Buren as time went on. The result is a mod that feels like an entirely new game and something fans of the original isometric games have long wanted. Essentially this can be thought of as Fallout 2.5 in some ways.

Fallout Yesterday has added over 30 new quests, 100 new weapons and items, as well as improvements to the party management system, bug fixes, special encounters, and even new craftables. The mod is open source so more can be done with it by other modders and fans, and this could result in more interesting additions. Those interested can try the mod themselves by getting it here.
