It looks like the throne of Knights of Honor II: Sovereign has finally found a new ruler. After launching back in December 2022, the medieval grand strategy game is getting renewed support, with Update 7 arriving today as the first step in a new commitment to the game.

The update comes from a new group of veteran developers working under a new banner, with THQ Nordic describing the renewed development as part of its approach to “asset care.” Rather than leaving older games behind, the publisher says it wants to continue supporting titles with active communities, and Knights of Honor II: Sovereign is now getting that treatment.

Update 7 focuses heavily on two important parts of the medieval experience: espionage and mercenaries. Both systems have been redesigned with the goal of making them more interesting and useful throughout the early, mid and late stages of a campaign. That should give players more reasons to make use of the tools available to them as their kingdoms grow, whether they prefer intrigue, military expansion or a mixture of both.

For those unfamiliar with Knights of Honor II: Sovereign, the game puts players in control of a kingdom as they compete for control of medieval Europe. It combines real-time grand strategy with more direct RTS combat, allowing players to manage everything from religion and city development to diplomacy, trade and warfare.

The royal court is another major part of the experience, with players able to appoint Marshalls, Clerics, Merchants, Diplomats and Spies to help shape the fate of their kingdom. Armies can be raised to defend territory or conquer new lands, while battles can also be fought directly rather than being handled entirely through traditional grand strategy systems.

Knights of Honor II: Sovereign also supports multiplayer, allowing multiple players to take on medieval Europe together. With Update 7 now available, it appears the game’s reign is far from over, and this could be the beginning of a much longer second chapter for the medieval strategy title.

Knights of Honor II: Sovereign is available now on PC for $44.99 USD, €44.99 and £37.99.
