John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando is getting even more chaotic, with Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment rolling out the game’s second major update. The new Retrieval Update is now available as a free update for all players, adding a brand-new game mode, new enemies, weapons, gameplay improvements and more ways to embrace the wonderfully over-the-top zombie mayhem.
The biggest addition is Retrieval Mode, which gives players a new objective to worry about while fighting their way through hordes of undead. Rather than simply clearing out enemies, players will need to locate and collect valuable relics before making it to an extraction point.
Naturally, Toxic Commando isn’t going to make that particularly easy.
The more time players spend in the field, the greater the danger becomes, with the new mode putting the focus on moving quickly and knowing when it’s time to get out. Players will also have to contend with the Sludge, meaning there is plenty of incentive to grab what they need and make a run for extraction before things get completely out of control.
Retrieval Mode can currently be played across four maps: Church of the Damned, High Octane, Impasse and Demon Bait, giving players several locations to test their zombie-slaying and escape skills.
The update isn’t stopping with a new mode, either. Goblins have joined the undead ranks, bringing another nuisance for players to deal with. These smaller enemies attack in groups and focus their attacks on the same target, but their most troublesome ability is that they can revive one another. As long as one of the three Goblins in a group remains alive, the others can come back into the fight.
Fortunately, players are getting some new toys to help deal with the expanded zombie threat.
The Retrieval Update introduces four new weapons and tools: the Le Clairon assault rifle, Flamethrower, Thunderstick and Saw Trap. Each offers another way to tear through the infected, with the Saw Trap in particular providing a suitably brutal option for anyone looking to turn hordes of zombies into something considerably messier.
There are also a number of improvements designed to make the overall experience smoother. Players can now dash, while the update also introduces Trials Season 2, adds support for PC local servers, and brings improvements to vehicles and bots.
For players who have already spent plenty of time blasting their way through Toxic Commando’s zombie hordes, the combination of a new mode, enemy type and weapons should give them another reason to jump back in.
The update also comes alongside Cosmetic Pack 2, which is included with the game’s Bloody Season Pass. The new cosmetics take their inspiration from the Sludge God, giving players a selection of character skins and headgear alongside new weapon and vehicle skins. New profile titles and icons are also available for those who want to make their allegiance to the Sludge a little more obvious.
And if Toxic Commando’s brand of zombie-slaying chaos wasn’t already spreading far enough, one of its playable characters is now making the jump into another major game.
Walter Irons is coming to Fortnite, bringing one of Toxic Commando’s playable characters to the island. Walter will become available in Fortnite on September 5 at 8 p.m. EDT / 5 p.m. PDT / 2 a.m. CEST for players who own John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando through the Epic Games Store.
It’s a fitting crossover for a game that has always embraced its larger-than-life action, and it gives Toxic Commando players another reason to keep an eye on what the game is doing outside of its own zombie-infested battlefields.
John Carpenter’s Toxic Commando’s Retrieval Update is available now on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store. The update is free for existing players, so there’s no additional cost involved in jumping into the new mode and checking out everything that has been added.
For anyone who hasn’t picked up the game yet, there is also a limited-time discount available, with the base game receiving 30% off on Steam, while the Blood Edition is 35% off.
With a new objective-based mode, additional enemies, four new weapons, gameplay improvements and a fresh batch of cosmetics, the Retrieval Update gives Toxic Commando another shot of adrenaline as Saber Interactive continues expanding its chaotic take on cooperative zombie action.
