Campfire Cabal has shared a new update on Expeditions: Samurai following the tactical RPG’s Early Access launch a few weeks ago. While the team is already working on the game’s first major update, they have spent the time since launch reading through community feedback, and they thanked players for taking the time to weigh in. Getting that kind of input is one of the main reasons the studio chose to go the Early Access route in the first place.

One of the biggest changes on the way is a party size increase, going from four characters up to six. Smaller levels such as castles or manors will still cap the party at four, but most levels going forward will support a full six-person squad.

Companions are also getting a bigger role in conversations. Rather than the main character always driving dialogue, companions will soon be able to use their own skills during conversations, giving players more ways to approach a scene beyond whatever their protagonist happens to be good at.

Campfire Cabal is also tweaking the trade screens and improving the world map UX and general UI, alongside a set of changes aimed at stealth gameplay:

  • Enemies will enter combat more readily when they see you attack their allies.
  • Characters will now stay in sneak mode when executing a stealth takedown.
  • Ranged sneak attacks will get a cooldown.
  • Sneak attacks against aware or alert enemies will no longer deal bonus damage.

Beyond that, the team outlined several other items currently in the works:

  • Rebindable mouse inputs.
  • More character creation options.
  • New outfits, including a new default outfit for Kage.
  • Face and beard updates for Kage and Piet to bring them up to the detail level of the game’s other characters.
  • Scaled-down weapon models, notably daggers and pistols.
  • VFX updates, including improved gunsmoke effects for pistols, arquebuses/tanegashima, and the guns of De Albatros.
  • A fix for the action point regain effect in combat, which was still using a placeholder level-up VFX carried over from Expeditions: Rome. That effect will be restored to its intended use as a level-up VFX, with a new, subtler effect added for regaining an AP.

Expeditions: Samurai launched into Steam Early Access on August 7, 2026, with a full 1.0 release planned for Q1 2027.
