There are a lot of flash drives out on the market for the various cartridge based platforms. But there is one manufacturer or creator of such flash cartridges that just can’t be topped. I am referring of course to Krikzz. Krikzz has become the leader or household name among community members when it comes to flash based cartridges on the market.
In this article, we are going to take a look at the Everdrive GG X7 for the Game Gear. As you can see, the cartridge on the inside is pretty basic. You’ve got the chips, save battery for save states, and the SD Card Slot.
Once you get the cart, you load up the software onto a micro SD card (which isn’t included in the purchase from Krikzz directly), and you take the games you own and have backed up, and put them on the card along with the software.
Once you turn on your Game Gear with everything setup, it loads rather quickly and you’re presented with your games. As for what games are supported, it supports the entire library of Game Gear, Sega Master System, and it even supports a lot of SG-1000 games too. Now the SG-1000 games aren’t officially supported and I have not tested every game, but for those that I have tried, they do work and work very well.
With regards to the technical specifications, it supports a max ROM size of 4MB and a max Save RAM of 32KB, the OS supports up to 1000 files per folder, features low power consumption, ability to save and load save states for every game, and has a soft reset menu using a button combination.
The one thing I will mention about the soft reset to menu feature is that it has some issues with games that use internal save batteries. This will result in the cartridge locking up and you will have to power cycle the system to get it to work again. Though this shouldn’t matter with games that save using SRAM or internal batteries for those that support saving, it’s something that I felt was worth mentioning.
Two more things I wanted to touch on with regards to technical aspects of the cart is that I have tested the cart with an 8GB micro SD card and I can at least confirm it works with up to that large of a card, though your results may very based on size and card manufacturer. The last thing I wanted to touch on with regards to technical aspects of the cartridge is that it will work on original hardware, and in most cases original hardware that’s been modified, as well as clone consoles.
Though Krikzz has done their best to ensure best compatibility, again just like with the micro SD cards, results may vary depending on what’s been modified on the original hardware or what clone console you’re using.
So in closing, I would totally recommend picking up the Everdrive GG X7. It’s reliable, great quality, very fast to load, and is a great way to play your Game Gear, Sega Master Systems, and even SG-1000 games on the go!
