Armed Fantasia, the highly anticipated spiritual successor to Wild Arms, has been cancelled after years of development. The news comes from Digital Bros, the parent company of 505 Games, which confirmed in its fiscal 2026 financial results that the project has been discontinued.
Digital Bros listed Armed Fantasia alongside Directorate: Novitiate and a sequel to Battle Islands as projects that were cancelled following a review of their development progress, market prospects, and the additional investment that would have been required to bring them to market. The company also reported €17.6 million in write-offs connected to discontinued projects, although it did not specify how much of that figure was attributable to Armed Fantasia.
The cancellation is particularly notable given how Armed Fantasia began. The game was announced in 2022 through a joint Kickstarter campaign with Penny Blood, a spiritual successor to Shadow Hearts. Together, the projects raised more than ¥379 million from over 17,000 backers, with Armed Fantasia being led by Wild Arms creator Akifumi Kaneko. The game was envisioned as a Western-inspired JRPG featuring turn-based combat and its Cross Order Tactics battle system.
505 Games later joined the project as publisher, with Armed Fantasia planned for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. For fans of Wild Arms, the project represented an opportunity to return to the series’ blend of traditional JRPG mechanics, Western imagery, and a distinctive fantasy setting.
The cancellation also comes only months after the development team provided a significant update. In March 2026, Kaneko revealed that the team had completed a vertical slice ROM containing the game’s main scenario, core gameplay systems, and various integrated elements before submitting it to the publisher. At the time, the team said it was continuing to prepare the remaining content and refine the overall experience.
Digital Bros’ decision now brings that development effort to an end. According to the company’s explanation, multiple attempts had been made to revise the game’s gameplay before the project was ultimately discontinued, with changing market conditions, its commercial potential, and the cost of completing development all factored into the decision.
For the game’s backers, however, there are still questions surrounding what happens next. Digital Bros’ announcement does not provide details regarding refunds, Kickstarter rewards, or the status of any remaining development assets. Those details could be particularly significant considering the number of people who supported the project during its crowdfunding campaign.
After years of anticipation and a development update that suggested the game was still moving forward earlier this year, Armed Fantasia will now not reach its planned release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC.
