Retrobot is bringing a dose of old-school gothic action to PC with Accursed, a retro-inspired 2D action platformer that pits a priest against a vampire cult in a desperate search for his missing wife.Scheduled to launch on Steam on November 16, 2026, the game combines an authentic NES-inspired presentation with challenging boss battles, hidden relics, and a story about choosing between faith and love.
Set in Moldavia during the late 15th century, Accursed follows Elias, a parish priest who becomes a hunter of supernatural threats after his wife, Ileana, is marked by a vampire cult and disappears. When the Church considers her lost, Elias takes matters into his own hands, wielding a holy relic as he hunts the Order of the Black Chalice. His journey ultimately raises a difficult question: will he remain faithful to his beliefs if saving his wife means defying them?
The Steam listing promises six stages, taking players from a cursed swamp to a tower controlled by an ancient evil. Along the way, Elias will face 13 bosses, including a hidden encounter, with combat built around learning enemy patterns and surviving punishing fights. The game also embraces the limitations of its NES inspiration, using an authentic 8-bit resolution rather than widescreen presentation, keeping enemies and dangers close at hand.
Exploration also plays an important role, with five holy relics to discover and two golden relics to earn. These hidden treasures can change how Elias fights, and players can choose which relic to bring into each stage. The relics also determine which of the game’s two endings players receive, giving exploration a direct impact on how the story concludes.
Those looking for an additional challenge can work toward four stage ranks, unlock Boss Rush mode after completing the game, and take on Nightmare difficulty. Boss Rush pits players against every boss consecutively while racing against the clock, while Nightmare removes Elias’s protective armor, leaving players with little room for mistakes.
The trailer showcases the game’s retro pixel-art presentation and gothic atmosphere, alongside side-scrolling action, dangerous enemies, and the kind of formidable boss encounters that sit at the heart of its design. Its focus on classic-style visuals and demanding combat reflects Retrobot’s stated ambition to capture the appeal of an older generation of gothic platformers while incorporating modern design sensibilities.
Developed and published by Retrobot, Accursed is currently planned for release on PC through Steam on November 16, 2026. Players can wishlist the game ahead of launch.
