NACON and Teyon have unveiled the character creation system for Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish, giving players a closer look at how they will build their own monster hunters in the upcoming action RPG. As part of the World of Darkness franchise’s Month of Darkness celebrations, the new showcase highlights the game’s customization options and its approach to adapting the tabletop role-playing experience into a video game.
Unlike many action RPGs, Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish puts players in the role of an ordinary human rather than an unstoppable superhero. Surviving the horrors lurking throughout New York City will require careful character development, with attributes, skills, and personal traits playing an important role in determining how each Hunter approaches the darkness.
Character creation begins with appearance customization, allowing players to start from preset models before adjusting their Hunter’s physical build, hairstyle, clothing, tattoos, and scars. Those looking to jump straight into the adventure can choose from pre-built archetypes, while players who prefer a more hands-on approach can create their character from scratch.
The game adapts the fifth edition rules of the Hunter: The Reckoning tabletop role-playing game, with a progression system designed to make character development accessible while still offering considerable flexibility. Investing points in attributes such as Strength unlocks higher tiers of related skills, including Brawl, Melee, and Intimidation. This allows players to specialize in particular areas while developing a Hunter suited to their preferred approach, whether that involves diplomacy, stealth, or occult knowledge.
These abilities will also influence how players interact with the world through dice rolls, bringing another element of the tabletop experience into the video game. A charismatic Hunter may be able to talk their way out of a dangerous encounter, while those with a sharp mind can uncover important clues. Players will also select virtues and flaws before beginning their hunt, with these characteristics introducing additional strengths and weaknesses that can influence their journey.
“The heart of any RPG lies in the player’s ability to truly make their character their own. That’s why we wanted to deliver a character creator that is both deep and highly accessible,” said Piotr Latocha, Game Director at Teyon. “Every decision, from appearance to skills, will impact how you survive in the unforgiving world of Hunter: The Reckoning. Your character is a direct reflection of how you choose to face the darkness.”
Hunter: The Reckoning – Deathwish is scheduled to launch in 2027 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.
