Norsfell, the studio behind the 5-million-unit Tribes of Midgard, is venturing beyond Norse mythology with Aftergods, a new top-down survivalite action-RPG set in the aftermath of Ragnarök. Revealed during the Triple-i Initiative showcase, the game puts players in the role of Godborn, the children of gods who somehow survived the end of the world and now have to help rebuild what remains.

Rather than simply continuing the mythology explored in Tribes of Midgard, Aftergods expands Norsfell’s approach into a larger world drawing from multiple mythological traditions. Players will travel across Greek, Egyptian, and Norse-inspired regions while searching for the shattered Seeds of the World Tree, with the fate of a collapsed cosmos resting on their ability to restore them.

The Godborn aren’t quite gods in the traditional sense, however. Their divine abilities are tied to a resource called Nectar, forcing players to carefully manage their access to godly power. Running out can cause a Godborn to revert to their vulnerable mortal form, potentially turning an otherwise manageable encounter into a much more dangerous fight.

Survival also takes on a distinctly divine scale. Players can harvest entire forests with lightning storms, summon pre-built temples from the heavens, and use mortal food as an optional source of buffs. The game combines these mechanics with crafting, exploration, combat, and base building, while attempting to keep its survival systems focused on meaningful choices rather than constant punishment.

Building a new pantheon will be another major part of the experience. Players can rescue survivors ranging from ordinary mortals to fallen ancient gods and recruit them as followers, with different followers specializing in activities such as crafting, harvesting, resource storage, and base construction. As their faith grows, players can develop their settlements and construct monuments worthy of their new pantheon.

Exploration will also extend beyond simply walking across the world. Godborn can shapeshift into mythical creatures including phoenixes, manticores, and sirens, opening up different ways to traverse the game’s ruined landscapes. These forms can be used to climb mountains, cross oceans, and take to the skies as players explore the various mythological realms.

Aftergods is being designed for both solo and cooperative play, with full offline single-player support alongside multiplayer options. Norsfell is also planning peer-to-peer hosting and dedicated server rentals, giving players multiple ways to approach its survival systems. The game is being built with native controller support as well, with optimization for handheld devices such as Steam Deck.

The reveal trailer itself comes with some notable production talent behind it. The animated sequence was produced by Powerhouse Animation Studios, known for Blood of Zeus and Castlevania, while its live score was recorded by the 60-piece Budapest Scoring Orchestra.

Norsfell says Aftergods represents its most ambitious project yet, taking the studio’s established mix of top-down combat, survival crafting, mythological enemies, and co-op into a world where different mythologies can exist alongside one another.

Aftergods is in development for PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
