Village in the Shade is already proving to be a hit in Japan, with NIS America revealing that the unusual farming and horror game has surpassed 250,000 sales ahead of its upcoming North American and European release.
The publisher shared the milestone alongside a new look at Sounds from the Shade, the game’s original soundtrack. The collection features 38 songs spread across two discs, bringing together the music players will hear while farming, exploring, mining, and presumably trying not to get themselves killed by whatever lurks around Kagatsu after dark. The soundtrack will also be included with the game’s Limited Edition.
NIS America has also outlined what players can expect from Village in the Shade after launch. Two free updates are planned for the game’s release period, adding new furniture, livestock, catalog features, expanded farmland, a new birthday event for the protagonist, and more.
The post-launch plans will continue into spring 2027, when additional DLC is set to introduce new scenarios, gameplay systems, standalone events, and fresh maps. While the initial game focuses on establishing a quiet life in the Japanese mountain village of Kagatsu, these additions should give players more reasons to keep exploring its unusual setting.
Of course, Village in the Shade is not quite the peaceful farming simulator its countryside setting might initially suggest. Players can plant crops, customize their homes, fish, hunt, participate in traditional festivals, and build relationships with the village’s residents, but Kagatsu comes with some very specific rules: don’t talk to strangers, don’t leave the village, and don’t go outside at night.
For players who would rather experience the farming side without the horror, the game also features “Village in the Sunshine” mode. This removes the possibility of breaking those rules, allowing players to focus on farming, hunting, fishing, and countryside life without having to worry about uncovering the village’s darker secrets.
A Limited Edition of Village in the Shade is also available to preorder for $89.99. Alongside the game, the package includes a collector’s box, art book, original soundtrack, acrylic block, and a set of metal pins.
With more than 250,000 sales already recorded in Japan and additional content planned through spring 2027, Village in the Shade is heading into its North American and European launch with considerably more attention behind it than its quiet countryside setting might suggest.
