Caves of Qud is making the jump to Nintendo Switch 2 with a new native version of Freehold Games and Kitfox Games’ acclaimed science-fantasy roguelike, giving players another way to explore its bizarre and deeply simulated world.
The game was already released on the original Nintendo Switch earlier this year, but this new version is being developed specifically for Nintendo Switch 2. Existing Nintendo Switch owners will also be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 version for free.
For those unfamiliar with Caves of Qud, the game combines traditional roguelike mechanics with a remarkably open-ended science-fantasy setting. Players can create characters using a wide variety of mutations and cybernetics before venturing into a world populated by sentient plants, mutants and other strange inhabitants. Its systems are designed to interact in often unpredictable ways, making exploration and experimentation a major part of the experience. Nintendo describes it as a Hugo Award-winning science-fantasy roguelike built around deep simulation and a biologically diverse world.
The original Switch release supports several different ways to play, including a traditional Classic mode with permadeath, a Roleplay mode with checkpoints, and Wander mode, which puts more emphasis on exploration. That makes Caves of Qud considerably more flexible than its traditional roguelike description might initially suggest.
While the announcement does not yet provide a release date for the Nintendo Switch 2 version, a physical edition has also been confirmed. Lost in Cult currently lists Caves of Qud among its upcoming physical games, adding another option for players who would rather have a physical copy than purchase the game digitally.
There are still some details missing regarding what specifically will separate the native Nintendo Switch 2 release from the existing Switch version. The currently available information points to improvements including boosted resolution, but the full extent of the Switch 2-specific enhancements has yet to be detailed.
With its combination of traditional roguelike systems, extensive character customization and an unusually reactive science-fantasy world, Caves of Qud is now set to get another opportunity to find an audience on Nintendo’s newer hardware.
