Danganronpa 2×2 is adding another mystery to its twisted return to Jabberwock Island, as Spike Chunsoft has revealed Sakutaro Higashi, a brand-new character who will appear in the game’s new Slayhem Mode.
Higashi is one of the high school students pulled into the Class Trials featured in Slayhem Mode, though there is still plenty about him that Spike Chunsoft is keeping under wraps. His Ultimate talent is currently listed simply as “Ultimate ???,” meaning players will have to wait until they get their hands on the game to discover exactly what makes him special.
The new character is voiced by Natsuki Hanae in Japanese and Griffin Burns in English. Both actors have also teased Higashi’s mysterious Ultimate talent, with Hanae noting that this is his first appearance in the Danganronpa series. Burns similarly encouraged players to wait until the game’s release to find out more about Higashi and his role in the new scenario.
What makes Higashi particularly interesting is that he is part of the material being created specifically for Slayhem Mode. Rather than simply offering another way to play through Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair, Danganronpa 2×2 gives players two distinct versions of the story. Original Mode revisits the 2012 game with revamped visuals and presentation, while Slayhem Mode takes the same setting and characters and sends the story in a completely different direction. The alternate scenario features different victims, culprits and murder tricks, with the developers promising a substantial amount of new content.
That makes Sakutaro Higashi more than just another addition to the roster. His presence is another indication of just how much new material Danganronpa 2×2 is bringing to a story that longtime fans already know. Exactly where Higashi fits into the killing game, and what his mysterious Ultimate talent actually is, remain questions that Spike Chunsoft is leaving unanswered for now.
Danganronpa 2×2 is scheduled to launch on January 14, 2027, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store. Both Original Mode and Slayhem Mode will be available from the beginning.
