Under Mythos, a new dark fantasy RPG from Tokyo-based studio KADATH, has been announced for Switch and PC via Steam in 2028. The studio was founded by game producer Yoichi Miyaji, whose previous credits include the LUNAR and GRANDIA series.

KADATH’s debut title brings together creators with experience on some of Japan’s best-known games, including Pokémon, Tales of the Abyss, GRANDIA, and LUNAR. Under Mythos follows a lone cat who enters another world while searching for its mother, eventually discovering a mysterious hot spring inn where the inhabitants of the strange realm come to rest.

The cat begins working at the inn while continuing its search for Mother, spending its days welcoming and caring for guests. However, the peaceful routine gradually gives way to something much darker as an unpredictable disturbance spreads through the world.

Players will venture into dungeons to gather food and resources needed to support the inn, while also facing action-based combat against creatures that have been transformed into grotesque forms. Returning safely from these expeditions allows players to use what they have collected to develop the hot spring inn, with its expansion leading to new encounters and opportunities for further exploration.

KADATH has assembled a notable group of creators for the project. Graphic designer and illustrator Atsuko Nishida, known for designing various Pokémon, has created the game’s interpretation of Nyarlathotep from the Cthulhu Mythos. Scenario writer Takumi Miyajima previously worked on Tales of the Abyss, while composer Noriyuki Iwadare has credits including GRANDIA, LUNAR, and the Ace Attorney series.

Iwadare also teased a musical contrast between the game’s more peaceful sections and its descent into madness, while Miyaji described Under Mythos as a hybrid JRPG built around the opposing ideas of comfort and madness.

KADATH is currently preparing a vertical slice intended to demonstrate the game’s planned visual and audio direction alongside its core gameplay mechanics. The studio is also seeking collaboration partners for the vertical slice and the game’s future development.
