Gley Lancer: Overdrive is giving a 1992 Mega Drive shoot-’em-up a major makeover, with Nalua Studio rebuilding Advanced Busterhawk Gley Lancer for Neo Geo and modern platforms. The reimagining features completely redrawn pixel art, new gameplay mechanics, additional modes and a reworked soundtrack while retaining the spirit of the original.

Built natively for Neo Geo AES and MVS hardware, Gley Lancer: Overdrive will also be released for PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2027. Modern versions will support 16:9 widescreen alongside an optional 4:3 Neo Geo presentation, as well as features including CRT filters, haptic feedback, mouse aiming and Steam Deck support.

The game once again follows Federation Navy pilot Lucia Cabrock, who takes control of the experimental Gley Lancer after her father’s ship, the Oberon, is abducted by an unknown alien force. From there, players will blast their way through 11 reimagined stages in a side-scrolling shmup built around configurable Gunner satellites, multiple weapons and different firing directions.

One of the biggest additions is the new Overdrive mechanic. This temporary field can protect Lucia from attacks or be directed at enemies in eight different directions. Destroying enemies with Overdrive releases Cores that increase score multipliers, creating a risk-and-reward system that encourages players to decide when to play defensively and when to push for a higher score.

The Mover and Gunner systems from the original game also return with additional customization options. New Gunner types, Gunner Mode and the Speed Boost mechanic give players more ways to configure their ship and approach each stage.

The original 11 stages have been completely reimagined with new pixel art, animations, dynamic environments and redrawn cutscenes. The soundtrack has also been given a new treatment, reinterpreting the Mega Drive-era music while adding a fresh musical presentation.

Gley Lancer: Overdrive is also designed with replayability in mind, offering multiple difficulty levels alongside Score Attack, Boss Rush, Speedrunner, 1CC, Stage/Boss Select and Core Pickup Run modes. Modern platforms will additionally feature a Bullet Hell mode, while multiple endings give players another reason to return.

Gley Lancer: Overdrive will make its public debut at Tokyo Game Show 2026, where it will be playable alongside Nalua Studio’s Necro Pop at Hall 9, Booth C35 at Makuhari Messe from September 17 to 21.

Gley Lancer: Overdrive is scheduled to launch for Neo Geo AES, Neo Geo MVS, PC via Steam, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2027.
