The Moon Holy Grail War is finally returning. XSEED Games has announced that Fate/EXTRA Record, the ambitious remake of the 2010 PSP title Fate/EXTRA, will launch in the Americas on January 28, 2027, bringing its reimagined take on the Fate universe to Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4.

The release date was revealed during PlayStation’s State of Play alongside a new trailer showcasing the remake’s updated presentation and overhauled combat system. Rather than simply giving the original game a fresh coat of paint, Fate/EXTRA Record is being rebuilt with an expanded narrative, modern visuals, new voice work, and a completely revamped approach to battles.

At the heart of the remake is a new strategic card-based combat system that combines turn-based battles with deck-building mechanics. Players will need to make tactical decisions as they fight their way through the digital world of SE.RA.PH, with both the Master and their chosen Servant contributing unique abilities to the fight.

That marks a significant departure from the original Fate/EXTRA, which was released on PlayStation Portable in 2010. The remake is intended to revisit the story and characters of the original while adding new layers of depth and expanding its narrative.

Players take on the role of a Master who finds themselves trapped within the Moon Cell Automaton’s virtual world. After humanity discovers the supercomputer hidden on the Moon, it creates SE.RA.PH, a digital battlefield where 128 combatants are forced into a deadly competition for the Holy Grail.

The prize is more than enough to justify the danger. The Holy Grail can grant any wish, turning the competition into a life-or-death struggle between Masters and the Servants they summon.

The protagonist, however, enters the conflict at a serious disadvantage. Having lost their memories and with no idea why they have been drawn into this strange digital battlefield, they are forced to participate in the Moon Holy Grail War with survival as their only immediate goal.

Players will be able to choose between three Servants: Saber, Archer, and Caster. Each provides a different combat style, giving players some control over how they approach the game’s battles.

The relationship between Master and Servant will also play an important role throughout the adventure. As players explore SE.RA.PH and fight their way through its digital dungeons, their bond with their chosen Servant will develop. Strengthening that relationship can unlock additional cards and abilities, giving players more options as the battle system opens up.

That progression is particularly important given the remake’s new emphasis on strategic card play. Instead of relying solely on the systems from the PSP original, Fate/EXTRA Record is designed around a more flexible battle system where players can build their approach around different abilities and make use of both Master and Servant skills.

The remake is also receiving a major visual upgrade. Character designs and environments have been redesigned for modern hardware, while the game will feature full Japanese voice acting and an entirely new musical score. The package will also include the original Fate/EXTRA soundtrack in certain editions, giving longtime fans a way to reconnect with the PSP-era game while experiencing its modern reinterpretation.

For collectors, XSEED Games will offer a physical Limited Edition alongside the standard release. The package will include the game in a custom outer box, a Steelbook containing a three-disc soundtrack with both the new score and the original Fate/EXTRA soundtrack, as well as an art book featuring more than 100 pages of original and concept artwork.

The standard physical edition will cost $59.99 on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5, while the Nintendo Switch 2 version will cost $69.99 and will be fully contained on the cartridge.

The Limited Edition will be priced at $89.99 on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 5 and $99.99 on Nintendo Switch 2. Physical pre-orders are expected to open through the Marvelous USA Online Store and participating retailers at a later date.

Digital versions will also be available across all four platforms. The standard digital edition will cost $59.99, while a $79.99 Digital Deluxe Edition will include the game, a digital soundtrack, a digital art book, Fate/EXTRA soundtrack DLC, and the Servant and Player Special Outfits Bundle.

That bundle includes the Beach Style Set, Night Style Set, and Festival Style Set, giving players additional cosmetic options for their journey through SE.RA.PH.

Originally released more than 15 years ago, Fate/EXTRA has become an important part of the wider Fate franchise, and Fate/EXTRA Record looks to give that chapter a considerably larger and more modern presentation. With its expanded story, redesigned visuals, new music, and card-driven combat, this is shaping up to be far more than a straightforward remaster.

Fate/EXTRA Record is scheduled to launch worldwide on January 28, 2027, with XSEED Games publishing the game in the Americas and Marvelous Europe handling its European release. The game has received a T for Teen rating from the ESRB.
