PlayStation 5 players won’t have to wait much longer to find out what is hiding in the darkness. NIS America has announced that Yomawari: The Long Night Collection and Yomawari: Lost in the Dark will both arrive on PlayStation 5 in the west on November 5, 2026.
The two releases offer a pair of unsettling takes on survival horror, combining deceptively cute visuals with lonely streets, Japanese folklore and supernatural creatures that would rather not be disturbed. Rather than giving players an arsenal and encouraging them to blast their way through the night, Yomawari is much more interested in making you feel vulnerable.
Yomawari: The Long Night Collection brings together Yomawari: Night Alone and Yomawari: Midnight Shadows, allowing both games to be experienced as part of a single package. The collection originally made its debut on Switch in Japan in October 2018 before reaching the west later that month. Its PS5 version previously launched in Japan on May 14, 2026.
The first game follows a young girl searching for her missing sister after night falls, sending her into a rural Japanese town where something feels very wrong. Midnight Shadows expands the story with Yui and Haru, two schoolgirls who find themselves facing their own supernatural nightmare.
The town may look quiet, but the Yomawari series has never been particularly interested in letting its protagonists enjoy a peaceful walk home. Spirits inspired by Japanese urban legends can be found throughout the environment, and players will have to investigate their surroundings while figuring out which creatures can be safely approached and which ones should be avoided at all costs.
Exploration plays a major role in both games. Hidden objects can be discovered throughout the world and added to the player’s collection, with some items providing ways to interact with spirits or uncover additional story events. When a supernatural encounter turns hostile, however, discretion is usually the better part of survival.
Players can sneak past spirits, hide in bushes, sprint away or use items to distract them. Some of the creatures are considerably faster than others, making a seemingly simple escape much more stressful than it initially appears.
Meanwhile, Yomawari: Lost in the Dark puts players in control of another young girl facing a supernatural problem of her own. After being cursed and losing her memories, she must venture into the streets at night to recover what she has forgotten and find a way to break the curse.
Of course, wandering around a haunted town after dark is never going to be a particularly sensible idea.
Lost in the Dark surrounds its protagonist with new spirits and eerie environments designed to keep players constantly on edge. The flashlight can be used to uncover clues and investigate the darkness, while the protagonist’s heartbeat can serve as an unsettling warning that something may be lurking nearby.
One of the game’s more unusual survival mechanics involves simply closing your eyes. Certain spirits can react to the protagonist’s gaze, meaning players may need to shut their eyes to avoid being noticed. It is a fittingly strange mechanic for a series where sometimes the safest thing you can do is refuse to look at what’s standing in front of you.
Lost in the Dark also introduced character customization to Yomawari, allowing players to alter the protagonist’s hairstyle, hair color, clothing and accessories. It gives players a small opportunity to personalize their character before sending her straight back into a town filled with things that probably should not exist.
Yomawari: Lost in the Dark originally launched for PlayStation 4 and Switch in Japan in April 2022 before reaching the west alongside its PC release in October of that year. The PS5 version followed in Japan on March 12, 2026.
For horror fans, the appeal of Yomawari has always come from the same unlikely combination: charming characters, atmospheric environments and some seriously creepy things hiding just outside the light. The series doesn’t need to throw constant jump scares at the player when simply walking down an empty street is enough to make you wonder whether something is watching.
Both Yomawari: The Long Night Collection and Yomawari: Lost in the Dark will be released for PlayStation 5 in the west on November 5, 2026. If you’re planning on taking a late-night stroll through either game’s haunted streets, just remember that getting home safely is easier said than done.
