Budget games with a simplistic control scheme are something that has seen a growth in demand with the rise of digital gaming. Smaller games with a limited scope have a tendency to keep things focused better, but they can just as easily be disappointing. We are not asking for a massive scale game, but just something that is fun to play, and unfortunately we often have to wade through a lot of garbage to get to the good stuff.

Musashi vs Cthulhu is an example of a budget game done right, as it is both extremely cheap and well-made. You play as a lone samurai who must stop an army of Lovecraftian horrors from invading, which is a simple enough premise, but the nature of the game lends itself to repeated play and a desire to keep going.

This is a six button control scheme game, but it never feels too complicated to control. This is actually a relatively simple to understand game, with attacks high, middle, and low for both right and left, with attacks for left using the d-pad and attacks for right using the face buttons. It works out surprisingly well, and the game helps ease you into things as you enter the forest and begin taking on enemies. You can even taunt and get some life back if you time things right and even get a full retry while pushing enemies back. The thing to remember, though, is that enemies can only attack you when you are not attacking, so this requires some getting used to and good speed.

Musashi vs Cthulhu is a score chaser game with online leaderboards, and it honestly feels great. Once you get the hang of things, you really start to enjoy the game and the difficulty ramps up with enemies that require more strategy to defeat and even an appearance from Lovecraft’s most famous monster. The game manages to capture what makes Vampire Survivors so addictive, but there is one catch, and that is that some notifications appearing on-screen can end up being distracting,

Musashi vs Cthulhu just oozes charm and, like many budget releases from QUByte Games, is a title you can spend hours playing and lose yourself in the zone. The artwork and animation are excellent and the music and other sound effects add so much to the game, There is also an optional Fast Start to allow you to get started faster after failing a few rounds.

If you are looking for a budget game to have fun with and are not expecting a grand experience, then Musashi vs Cthulhu is for you. It understands that sometimes simple is better and creates a gameplay experience that is fun, compelling but above all else, fair. This one comes highly recommended.
