Alex is the principal of sorts of Obsidian High. He has a magic wand called the ruler orb that lets him guide his students in battle. He can’t fight himself but he can buff the students. His students and friends love him because he is a kind and considerate young man. He might not have a lot of experience but with his rod in hand, he will do what he sets out to.
While the tutorial gives Alex three unnamed characters to fight with the player can call in their own characters. Each of the 10 classes offers up a male and female form and each have their strengths and weaknesses and all are ready to fight for Alex’s sake.
Alex can recruit any number of students to join his cause, and each student obviously falls into one race or gender. But each can be named, which means it could be time to venture off with characters named after friends. This is my favorite type of adventure, as many games don’t let players name their parties.
Each character also has random character traits, which adds another layer of customization since the character models themselves cannot be customized. You could have a masochist streamer yandere or a sweet passive extrovert. The options are pretty endless and from a role-playing standpoint, it’s great.
The game is quite different than what players might expect. Players control their army, Alex can summon allies to the field but has no physical power of his own. He leads the team from the back as his allies take down the numerous enemies that pop up.
Alex controls everything in the game, and he is the focal point for the action. The player can move their characters to suit them or just let Alex lead from behind while the characters will auto fight so it’s simply a matter of strategy. Alex can heal wounds if necessary but keeping him alive is always the top priority.
As the characters exist in the level Alex gains more magic points and by using his MP, the player can level up their characters which of course strengthens them. Each character can be levelled up 5 times in each battle to increase their power and range for that level. This level exists differently than the actual level of each character.
Each level does have a time limit too, which adds to the semi-franticness of the game itself. This is one way in which the game is different, but it doesn’t do things to make itself harder. The levels are endlessly relatable and it’s always fun to beat them as quickly as possible, just to test the player’s mettle.
The game consists of 30-plus levels with story scenes in between. The story is pretty lively even with the characters basically just being static images that move to show the characters’ emotions. It might not be the most detailed but it has beauty in its simplicity.
In between levels, players can recruit other students to battle for Alex, rewatch cutscenes and buy items from the store. Obsidian High is a good base of operations for our hero and he can always go back there and adjust if things aren’t going well. This game aims to be one anyone can play and it does so with aplomb.
Players can also go to the lab to increase the power of their weapons and armor. Every little bit helps and each weapon can be enhanced up to 9 times. Players can than enhance their characters further with SP. These points increase the stats of the character in the Homework section.
The game even has a pretty great anime-style opening that showcases the characters. It highlights the different races that players can have in their armies as well as the main characters. Everyone is bright and cheery and it shows the player that they are in for a fun time.
The game has nice music too, and again it is not all that interesting but it works well. It always highlights the area the player is in and shows off the vibe of the area. The Japanese vibes of the school are especially strong and I think that adds to its charms.
Adventure Academia: The Fractured Continent is a great game and one that offers up plenty of customization. Players can build the team of their dream and fight alongside Alex as he works to achieve his goals. It might be simple in concept but players can maximize their power and figure out ways to win even faster. Will the player help Alex and co save the world?
