KOEI TECMO and Gust have revealed new gameplay details for The Apothecary Diaries: The False Imperial Brother, confirming that the first console game adaptation of the popular series will launch on March 18, 2027. Developed in collaboration with TOHO, the game is in development for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam, with pre-orders now available.
The original story will see Maomao investigate the Five Mysteries and solve five curses, bringing her into contact with familiar faces and new characters created by series author Hyuganatsu. Among the newcomers are Yanxi, a high-ranking official in the rear palace’s Bureau of Court Etiquette known for her fortune-telling abilities; Guanyu, a travelling actor; and Chenhan, a regular at the Verdigris House who finds himself the target of baseless accusations.
Beyond investigating the central mysteries, players can take on quests and deliver requested items, including medicine, to build trust with other characters. Strengthening these relationships unlocks special side stories, offering additional glimpses into the lives of the series’ cast.
While Maomao will be the primary playable character, certain sections will also let players take control of Jinshi and Maomao (Cat). Jinshi can use his position in the rear palace to obtain information from people unwilling to speak with Maomao, while Maomao (Cat) can reach otherwise inaccessible areas, eavesdrop on conversations, and retrieve clues. These different perspectives will help players uncover information that would otherwise remain out of reach.
The game will also feature medicine-making mini-games involving the Quack Doctor and Luomen, with the character selected affecting their difficulty. Players who meet specific conditions in each chapter will earn Completion Stamps, and collecting them all unlocks special illustrations.
The Apothecary Diaries: The False Imperial Brother will be available in standard and Digital Deluxe editions. The latter includes the base game, formal costumes for Maomao and Jinshi, a fantasy costume pack for Maomao, and a fashion accessory pack for Maomao (Cat).
Those who purchase a physical or digital copy by March 31, 2027, will receive the Apothecary’s Starter Kit and Modest Accessory Pack as an early purchase bonus. Digital pre-orders placed by March 17, 2027, will also include the Apothecary’s Tasteful Accessory Pack. The early purchase bonus content is included with the digital pre-order bonus.
