Fans of giant monster battles have another reason to keep an eye on Steam, as TokuPop has revealed Terror of the Titans, a new arena brawler that looks to capture the chaotic appeal of classic kaiju games while bringing its own roster of monsters, heroes, robots and aliens into the fight.
The game is being developed as a retro-inspired 3D arena fighter, with the Steam listing promising destructible environments where buildings and other parts of the battlefield can become part of the action. That immediately brings to mind games such as War of the Monsters, and Terror of the Titans certainly appears to be embracing that same idea of putting enormous creatures into arenas designed to be torn apart. The game is currently planned for PC via Steam, with TokuPop targeting a December 2028 release.
The first trailer provides a look at the game’s larger-than-life battles, showing several of its gigantic combatants throwing themselves into fights while the environments take plenty of punishment in the process. Among the characters revealed so far are Gaar, a massive yeti capable of using freezing abilities, Lazaroth, a fire-wielding dinosaur, and Vindicator, a mysterious golden giant who appears to take on the role of a more heroic figure. TokuPop says there will ultimately be 10 playable characters, with the remaining seven still to be revealed.
The trailer also gives a taste of the variety in the game’s arenas, with the action moving beyond ordinary city streets to locations inspired by real-world cities, military installations and extraterrestrial settings. These aren’t intended to simply provide different backdrops, either, as the developer is promising fully destructible arenas and hazards that can change as battles unfold. The result could make positioning and environmental destruction just as important as simply landing attacks.
Terror of the Titans will also have more than straightforward one-on-one battles. The game is planned to support up to four players through both local and online multiplayer, with Versus, Rampage and Sandbox modes. Rampage focuses on destruction-based competition, while Sandbox is designed around letting players create and record their own machinima-style scenes.
There is a single-player side to the game as well. TokuPop describes the campaign as a globe-spanning retro science-fiction adventure inspired by 1950s monster movies, with players facing human military forces, rival kaiju and invading aliens. In-engine cinematic sequences are also planned, suggesting that the developer wants Terror of the Titans to have more of a campy creature-feature identity rather than simply being an excuse to put monsters into an arena.
There is still a long wait before Terror of the Titans arrives, but the early footage makes its intentions fairly clear. With destructible environments, multiple types of giant combatants, four-player support and a deliberately old-school kaiju aesthetic, this is one to watch for anyone who still remembers the appeal of smashing monsters through buildings in classic arena brawlers.
