Super Crazy Rhythm Castle was a game that instantly caught my attention when it was first revealed. A  chaotic rhythm game from Konami? Well that had me curious right away Konami may be a controversial publisher now but they have also released some great indie-developed games including a revival of Getsufumaden, so this had a lot of potential.

Super Crazy Rhythm Castle sees you and up to three others go to the titular castle to try and unseat King Ferdinand and become king of the castle through a series of rhythm-based challenges. What this means is a series of tasks full of chaos that will keep you on your feet. I played for this review with friends, so I cannot judge how good they are in solo play, but with friends, this is fun the same way something like Overcooked is.

You must constantly be aware of things and playing with others keeps you on the edge at all times. The challenges and rhythm gameplay seemed a bit basic, to be honest, but playing in multiplayer never felt dull for a minute. It does make me concerned that the single-player will be lacking in comparison though, so that is something to keep in mind.

One issue I did have was that the controls which felt awkward and counterintuitive and the issue was that they could not be remapped. Good controls are key to a rhythm game and this held back Super Crazy Rhythm Castle quite a bit for me. I was able to get used to them over time but my friends and I struggled at first, though it did make for some fun while we all tried to get the hang of things, and messed with each other.

Super Crazy Rhythm Castle has a great visual look with a very surreal atmosphere and it helps give the game a unique identity. This game looks different and feels different and the weirdness in something that the game basks in. Some of the environments are truly out there and stand with some of the greats in terms of unique level design, but there is a flaw that needs to be addressed with the presentation before we go any further, and that flaw is the music sadly.

The music feels a bit generic for a rhythm game, and this baffles me. Konami has a massive library of video game music that could be used that would have fit here, or better songs could have been licensed, but instead, they just clash with the visual aesthetic and contrast that unique nature of the game with something so lacking.

A rhythm game lives and dies by its, music and it is kind of upsetting to see a game that has a lot of fun and potential be dragged down by the lacklustre music. Perhaps with DLC in the future, this can be changed, especially if Konami adds music from Konami games. Until then though, what we have is another mediocre element in what could have been a great game.

Super Crazy Rhythm Castle is a flawed game but has so much potential. The gameplay and visuals are amazing but the control scheme and music just drag it down. If more fixes were applied, then Konami would have a hit on its hands, but as it stands I am not sure if to recommend it or not. It is fun with friends but probably would not be great on its own, and there is so much of a sense of what could have been. It is my hope Konami patches the controls and adds some more content and music because there is too much potential for this game to be left as is. If that does happen, it will be an easy game to recommend.
