The subject of Game-Key Cards has been a contentious issue with Nintendo Switch 2 owners, being physical Game Cards for Switch 2 that still require a download. This of course means that everything needed to play the game isn’t on the Game Card, which has not sat well with fans. Pushback has been loud and is only getting louder on the matter.
Well, it seems there may be some hope if a new report is accurate. The Chinese website Uanalyze has put out a story on Macronix, a company that worked with Nintendo on Switch Game Cards and is continuing that partnership for Switch 2, and which contains some interesting details about Game Cards. Namely, that the storage medium might be getting some changes and very soon at that.
The report talks about howMacronix “will utilize both in-house MLC NAND and outsourced 3D NAND to meet varying capacity requirements” for Switch Game Cards. The article specifically mentions Switch and not Switch 2, but given how Switch 2 is the new primary system, you would need to figure that Switch 2 would be included in the efforts, if not the main focus.
The report seems to indicate that a new wave of Switch 2 Game Cards is on the way that will provide different amounts of storage space for games, but we do not have specifics right now. This could mean smaller cards, which will be much more cost effective and eliminate a need for Game Key Cards in some instances. However, it could also mean even bigger cards for more sizable titles, and that obviously comes with a price increase as well.
We will keep you updated on the situation.
