The Phillips CD-i has a complex history with a number of titles becoming infamous. One game for the system was Escape From CyberCity from Fathom Pictures’, a 1992 port of a somewhat obscure arcade laser-disc title called Freedom Fighter, an on-rail shooter released in 1987 that featured a number of anime cutscenes. There were a number of reports that a sequel was being developed for the game in the mid-90s for the CD-i and CD-ROM compatible PCs, called Return to CyberCity, but this title was never released.

There has been some wondering about what the game could have been like but now we need wonder no more as the CD-i fansite The World Of CD-i has recently revealed that a Beta version of this cancelled game for PC has been found, being discovered in a thrift store surprisingly.

This all came about after the user  @ActNRply posted a comment beneath  The World Of CD-i’s playthrough of Escape From CyberCity on YouTube reading:

“I just found a cd case at the thrift store titled RETURN TO CYBERCITY Inside is a burned disc labeled the same as the title as well as ‘BETA 95.03.17 for PC-REALMAGIC’ Does anyone know if a sequel was even planned? Wtf is this thing?”

After this comment was posted, The World of CD-i was able to get in touch with the commenter and has posted some details about the find, including images of the disc and its in-lay.  In a bit of good news, the game is now on its way to the archival group Hidden Palace in order to be preserved for the future, and hopefully, we will see more of this in the future.
